Post 325: Open Space Arts Emerging Artists April Show

Open Space Arts Emerging Artists April Show

Friday, March 31, 2023. The opening art reception for the "Emerging Artists" show was held at Open Space Arts at the Stonebridge Shopping Center - 15000 #140 Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge, VA. Well over 100 guests were in attendance with the student artists and their families as well as Prince William Art Society members.

Emerging Artists 2023

I have to say "HAPPY ANNIVERSARY OPEN SPACE ARTS!" Today, April 2, 2023 is our one year anniversary of being open (in a continuous year)! We were open 3 weeks in November and December of 2021, but the gallery opened on Saturday, April 2 2022 and has been open since, displaying the art of local Prince William County artists and art groups, like the Prince William Art Society (PWAS). PWAS and their army of volunteers has 'manned' the desk and volunteer scheduling for the gallery portion of Open Space Arts (OSA).

The Emerging Artists Show will be an annual art show in the spring. This year's show features the art of students and young artists from 15 to 25 years old from around the county and various schools/colleges.

There is also a section of the gallery set aside for past People's Choice Award winning paintings. When visitors come to OSA, we often ask for them to vote their favorite art pieces - and here are some of those past winners.

Let's take a look at what these talented individuals have on display for you this month - Emerging Artists May 29 - April 30, 2023.

Many of the Emerging Artists came up and talked about their art and what motivates them. As you can see from above, Prince William County got talent!

And on top of that, the Prince William Art Society offers an annual scholarship for high school seniors that are going to pursue the arts in college, so that is something for these students to be aware of (EARLY each year).

It is definitely a learning experience for the youngsters to see what is involved in getting your art up on the walls! The students are also asked to work with our veteran art volunteers at the gallery on weekends to give them real-life experience, confidence and that sometimes requested 'community service' time.

Come by this month's show and see the art!

Post 324: PWAS, What's On Your Easel?

PWAS, What's On Your Easel?

Creative folk nearly always have something they are working on. So my often asked question of the Prince William Art Society (PWAS) members is what are they working on now (what's on your easel)? Here are the answers from some of the members.

Javier Silvio

The title of my work is called a little bit of everything it is oil the size is 18x20

Evelyn Chatters

Valley Vibes, 12X12

Otis Stanley

In the early stages. 11" x 14" Acrylic "Wash Day"

Bruce Fasick

“Ponder”medium watercolours paper Strathmore 22x30

Michelle Baker

Earth Day Project - I am moving into the direction of industrial art lately. These Earth Day Wire Flowers were made from leftover material when my husband replaced our smoke detectors. He cut off the connectors. I stripped off the plastic coating and designed them. Love the lightness of the look.

Zorri Berrios (Zee)

This is what is on the easel. It is acrylic on canvas 48” X 48”. To be titled: “Slava Ukraini”.

I've got a double thing going on here - Two 5x7 waterfalls in acrylic. I've been doing that a few times lately, several similar paintings of the same size, different versions. Also, a tip to take note of if you haven't already discovered it yourself, is that taking a picture of your painting in progress helps you to SEE it better. For some reason, the image clarifies the view of the painting and helps you to see problem areas that don't seem right and then you can make alterations for improvement.

A Call for Art is coming out TOMORROW, April 2 for "April Showers Bring May Flowers" the Open Space Arts gallery at Stonebridge for their May art show. The Call will be open for about 2 weeks so if you are not already on the Prince William Art Society's email list, get on it quick! See info below.

The Artistry Spin Blog is starting a series for Prince William Art Society (PWAS) members called "Spotlight Artists", where those artists that want to be featured will submit a prearranged template for posting here and spread on our PWAS social media sites.

Our first featured Prince William Art Society member artist...

PWAS Spotlight Artist Donna Liguria

Date: 3/28/2023

Artist Style: Photorealism

Artist Mediums: Mainly Acrylic

Artist Bio:

A native Virginian, born in Alexandria and wandering through Central Virginia before moving back to Northern Virginia - Woodbridge in 2007, Donna Liguria has always been a dabbling artist and painter, working mainly with acrylics on canvas. Her style is typically ‘painted realism’ rendering landscapes, seascapes, animals and pets, and wonderful places to be and see. She often gets comments, “is it a photo or a painting?”

Her life-long art experiences included a previous paint business, called WallDreams where she painted murals on walls in restaurants and homes around Virginia. Previous “non-art” work also included owning several restaurant businesses in Charlottesville and Louisa, Virginia, and more recently working for a Northern Virginia IT company at Tyson's Corner.

Now semi-retired, Donna is mostly self-taught. She is inspired by beautiful colors, textures, sun light, and shadows with a passion to applying the captured vision to canvas, with the thought to “painting it as real as it can be”. She has a love of painting water, beaches and historical Virginia locations.

Donna is also a member of the Manassas Art Guild (MAG) and looks forward to appearing in local art shows coming up at Open Space Arts, Occoquan Arts and Crafts, Art at the Mill, Tall Oaks Community Center, Arts Alive, and more. Donna is also the main writer for the PWAS Blog Artistry Spin as well as her own Blog.
