Post 345: PWAS Spotlight Artist Helen Joyce Burroughs

PWAS Spotlight Artist Helen Joyce Burroughs

The Artistry Spin Blog has started a series for Prince William Art Society (PWAS) members called "Spotlight Artists", where those artists that want to be featured will submit a prearranged template for posting here and spread on our PWAS social media sites.

This week's featured PWAS Spotlight Artist...

Helen Joyce Burroughs

Date: 5/3/2023

Artist Style: Abstract, landscapes, mixed media

Artist Mediums: oil pastel, acrylic, textile

Artist Bio:

Helen grew up in 1960s Los Angeles with the warmth of the sun; palm trees; ocean breezes; the sound of cool jazz; and gardens filled with bougainvillea, roses, camellias and gladiolus.

Color has the most impact on her art with the repetition of forms, light, and colors. Texture is created with silk, cotton, wool and gels. Her work ranges from abstract to representational.

The only message she wants to convey is one of joy. She wants the viewer to feel happy, at peace and perhaps intrigued, when they enjoy the light, color, texture and movement of her art.

Post 341: PWAS Member Helen Burroughs Talks Fiber Art

PWAS Member Helen Burroughs Talks Fiber Art

Monday, April 24, 2023. Our featured guest artist this month was fellow Prince William Art Society member Helen Joyce Burroughs. Helen showed off some previous fiber art works she has created and gave many helpful tips on how to get started when creating and combining fiber and paint.

One of the tips Helen mentioned that stood out to me was about combining a painted background on the canvas with silk ribbon. Using gesso on your canvas will make the artwork FAR more difficult to do. You would be better off purchasing ungesso'd, unstretched canvas and having it stretched. The needle getting through a gesso'd canvas...well, you will have your work cut out for you there!

PWAS members have the opportunity to Zoom into the monthly meetings. Recently, the meetings have started with the guest speaker presentation, typically followed by light refreshments, then on to the business part of the PWAS meeting. New members are acknowledged and visitors are welcome too.

Open Space Arts Call for Art for "Threads"

As was mentioned in the meeting, sometime in August - September (if not earlier) a call for art will go out for the art show at Open Space Arts called "Threads". This show will feature fine creative arts with fiber/materials. Very often, these types of artworks take a lot of time to create - so this is a heads up for this show so you can plan your entries. The show will run October 18 to November 12, 2023.

Ms. Burroughs is a native of California. She has traveled the world for her career in international trade and her personal interest in other cultures. She has visited over thirty countries, always taking the time to explore the art and gardens of the places she visited. Much of her work builds on her love of folk art that is dominate in the countries of Russia, South America and parts of Eastern Europe. The vibrant colors and emotional motifs that characterize the development of art in these countries influences her work.

Ms. Burroughs enjoys using a broad range of techniques and concepts. Her work utilizes oil, oil pastel, acrylics and textiles depending on which medium best suits the concept and emotions with which she is working. She has utilized her interest in textile art, including embroidery which she studied in France, to enhance her paintings. Her work can be viewed at her website  . She explains this process in a YouTube interview with the McLean Textile Gallery which can be viewed here:  https://youtu.be/O1Xkv8wHTew and will share some of her unique ways of interacting with the surface of her works to introduce texture and the unexpected.

Post 239: Meet a PWAS Member: Helen Burroughs

Meet a PWAS Member: Helen Burroughs

A Lifelong Art Lover & At Collector Becomes an Artist

Helen Burroughs has loved art since childhood. As an executive, she traveled the world for work and collected art along the way. In retirement, a conversation with a gallery owner sparked an artistic journey that is evolving and flourishing today.

Pushing the Boundaries of Mediums

Helen has enjoyed using acrylics and oil pastels to create both representational and abstract art:

In our interview linked below, Helen tells us how she has come to incorporate textiles into her visual art, from ribbon embroidery to a new wool technique that she is developing herself. It's exciting to hear how an artist has pushed her art into new media and directions!

In fact, Helen is currently creating a body of work for an exhibition that's scheduled for January 2023 at the McLean Textile Gallery.

More Inspiration from Helen: An Artist Catalog

In our recorded conversation, Helen shows us a remarkable marketing tool that she created: a full-color artist catalog. As you watch her flip through the catalog, you may be inspired to create something similar to showcase your own artwork!

Watch Helen's Interview Below—She's on a remarkable journey!
