Post 321: PWAS Meeting with Guest Artist Marni Maree March 27, 2023

PWAS Meeting with Guest Artist Marni Maree March 27, 2023

Another PWAS meeting has gone by, did you miss it? If you weren't there, you missed another good one! Marni Maree gave a wonderful and humorous program called "Art on the Run" which foretold just how fast you might be running depending on what is in the bag!

Art on the Run

Marni walked the membership through the often challenging aspects when plein air painting, especially on vacation or destination painting, and what to pack, and how to pack well especially when traveling to far away locations.

You know how it is...what do I need? What do I carry things in? How much of this or that do I need? I need so many things in case I want to use certain colors, supplies, and more.

The artist might need:

Something to sit upon
Something to draw upon and in - sketchbook
Paints - in Marnie's case, watercolors
Water Bottle, Sprayer
Palette
Pens, markers
Misc items like paper binders, clips, magnets
Something to carry it all in

It began with packing everything Marni could possibly need in a wonderfully large bag complete with sections and a beach chair.

The next trip, the bag, the seat, the number of items were downsized. The number of palettes and their size were all reconsidered...yet, this was still rather cumbersome.

Next trip, another bag. A completely foldable chair, although the potential for being uncomfortable, lightweight is a must. Or is it?

There was still room for improvement and less neck and back pain to be considered.

An inflatable cushion! On occasion, a chair can be made more comfortable or a nearby rock can be made info a more comfy place to do a quick sketch.

Fewer and smaller, more compact, lighter weight options and only the most necessary of tools and supplies. Many options were found on Amazon and helped to build the supplies for the next trip...
The current favorite supply bag and supplies

But wait, one more idea when traveling and room for everything, in miniature of course, including passport!

Marni creates her own sketch books with various paper types, sizes and shows how the papers can be cut to be expandable.

A fascinating, funny, and honest look at how we grow and learn as artists to address issues and use our own creativity to "make it work" in our own ways.

PWAS Members Attend in Person or via Zoom

Prince William Art Society has purchased some tech equipment that will enhance our PWAS membership's ability to take part in our meetings in person or via the internet. There is a Zoom link in the member meeting email reminder, sent out to the membership if you cannot attend in person. Be sure and have the Zoom app/link updated prior to joining the meeting to save time.

Some members live fairly far away considering the commuting times (work and family) that are often a part of living in Northern Virginia. Make sure you mark your calendars and join the meetings so you can stay aware of not only the Artist Guest speaker, but the PWAS Business portion of the meetings as well.

Post 310: PWAS March 27, 2023 Meeting and Program

PWAS March 27, 2023 Meeting and Program

On March 27th at 7:30 pm the Prince William Art Society will meet at the Tall Oaks Community Center at 12298 Cotton Mill Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22192 for a business meeting and program "Art On The Run". The PWAS will host guest Fine Artist Marni Maree. Marni is a watercolor artist who loves to paint, teach and travel.

Art on the Run

The Prince William Art Society meets at the Tall Oaks Community Center for a monthly business meeting and program. The program for March 2023 is "Art On The Run" and will feature the fine art guest, Marni Maree. Marni is a watercolor artist who loves to paint, teach and travel and she has led many international travel workshops in France, Italy, and on the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth (in June) as well as Artist Residencies in France and Brazil. She has taught locally at the Workhouse, in her home studio, Green Spring Gardens, Goodwin House, and various other workshops. When the Pandemic hit, Marni immediately pivoted to teaching on Zoom. This has been wonderful and she will continue to teach this way even after it is safe to teach in person again. Her students can attend from all over the world now.

The Prince William Art Society programs are free and open to the public. Everyone is invited to come enjoy the program. Marni will show how she pared down her drawing and watercolor supplies to make it much easier to draw and paint anywhere, especially while traveling. Marni makes her own mini palettes and you can too.

Spring is just around the corner, so being able to paint in new locations with greater ease might be exactly what you need for those fresh landscapes, architectural views and other compositions you've been yearning all winter to produce beyond the walls of your studio space. With the gallery Open Space Arts calling for floral inspired paintings in May there's only a month to get painting! Ms. Maree has YouTube videos on painting flowers from start to finish, as well as art on display at the Lorton Workhouse and online at https://marnimaree.com/.

Some samples of Marni's work...

We'll see you at the meeting - Monday, March 27!
