Post 452: Bluebells and the Plein Air Posse

Bluebells and the Plein Air Posse

A story about the inaugural outdoor plein air painting session of the new Prince William Art Society group called the Plein Air Posse which had their first meeting and outing at the Merrimac Farm in Nokesville, Virginia on Sunday, April 7, 2024. The Bluebell Festival at this historic location made for a wonderful subject and feature for the group's artwork: Bluebells.

Bluebells and the Plein Air Posse

by Tom Payne

A crisp Sunday morning dawned on Merrimac Farm as members of the PWAS Plein Air Posse rode into Nokesville, Va. The sun was shining, the wind had died down from the previous day, and five PWAS artists were ready for a perfect day of painting among blooming bluebell flowers.

David Dillon, Robert Dew, Jess Kodad, Doreen Dauer, and Jeff Holman walked
down the trail that runs along Cedar Creek until each one found a suitable location to set up shop and begin their individual plein air painting experience.

The morning sunlight, streaming in from the east, cast long dappled shadows on the bluebells and the forest floor. Blues, greens, and browns were the colors of the day as beautiful sketches slowly appeared on the artists’ paper and canvas. Many visitors on the bluebell trail stopped to chat with the artists, offering compliments and words of encouragement. Everyone was smiling and enjoying the sea of azure blue at their feet.

Elizabeth Stathis and Donna Liguria held down the fort at the PWAS table. Lots of folks stopped by, admired the artwork, and inquired about joining our illustrious art society. We hope to see them again at an upcoming membership meeting.

One exciting highlight occurred when a photojournalist from Voice of America stopped to photograph and interview Doreen Dauer as she worked on her oil painting along the bluebell trail.

He also stopped and photographed me as I was photographing Jeff Holman. Who knows? With a little luck, maybe PWAS will go worldwide as part of the story being done by VOA about the Bluebell Festival.

In case you didn’t know (I didn’t), Voice of America is the state-owned news network and international radio broadcaster of the USA! It is the largest and oldest of the U.S. funded international broadcasters, producing digital, TV, and radio content in 49 languages, distributed around the world. Its targeted and primary audience is non-American. As of November 2022, its reporting reached 326 million adults per week across all platforms. Very cool!

During the day, I wandered down the trail and captured photographs of each PWAS
artist hard at work and enjoying the zen magic of the glorious day. Stay tuned and keep an eye out as members of the Posse begin to share their artwork on Facebook, the PWAS website, and the PWAS blog - Artistry Spin. They don’t know it yet but I’m going to encourage the plein air artists to share their experience and insights at a future membership meeting. The Plein Air Posse is always ready to ride, in search looking for more awesome painters and painting opportunities. Enjoy today!

Post: Art Tips 11 - Mobile Phone Photography

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...11

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This is an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

Mobile Phone Photography - from Tom Payne

Usually, in the PWAS Art Tips post we have 12 tips. This one has 16 because they are all part of a class PWAS Member Tom Payne held once.

If your intention is to take a quality photograph with a mobile phone or DSLR, consider the following tips:

  1. Keep the lens clean.
  2. Activate the grid in your phone app if possible.
  3. Hold the phone with both hands when you are shooting. Rotate the camera to a position that is comfortable to shoot from. Take note of where the lens is in relation to your fingers!
  4. Get close and fill the frame with your subject. When you think you’re close enough, take a picture and then…get closer and take more.
  5. Zooming in too far can reduce the quality and sharpness of the photo.
  6. Look around and find places and shapes in which to frame your subject. Create a frame within a frame. Shoot through things (plants, doorways, boat portholes)
  7. Rule of Thirds - where the lines intersect and the three vertical x horizontal areas
  8. Leading Lines should direct the viewers eye toward the main subject.
  9. Rule of Odds. Odd numbers of objects are more interesting.
  10. Look for symmetry.
  11. Use editing software. (like Snapseed)
  12. Choose an unusual vantage point and angles. Walk around the subject. High, low, turn the camera, consider vertical or horizontal, multiple angles
  13. Think of what everyone else is shooting and then do the opposite.
  14. Lighting! Find the light source and move yourself and/or your subject. Watch out for backlighting. Especially important when on the water.
  15. The Golden Hour - early morning or late afternoon
  16. Add or remove things things in the photo that enhance the main subject.

Art Tips is a series of blog posts with 12 tips per post. See the rest of the Art Tips Series on this page for more tidbits of advice: https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/p/art.html

Post 286: Open Space Arts People's Choice Winners Jan 2023

Open Space Arts People's Choice Winners Jan 2023 After the Master's Style Art Show

As we draw towards the end of this month's art show at the Open Space Art gallery, we count the votes. During the month, we ask the gallery visitors to vote on their favorite art piece of our art shows and then we give out ribbons for 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place for People's Choice based on the vote counts.

And the Winners Are...

This art show was called "After the Master's Style" where we asked our artists that answered the Call for Art to submit work that is "inspired by" their favorite master artists. It is fun to watch the gallery visitors really consider the artwork for their choice and we often hear, "Can I only pick one?" And their faces reflect the difficulty in selecting only one! That's a good thing!

It really tickles me to watch the visitors taking in the art as they studiously go from piece to piece trying to decide their favorite. To me, the choice for first place this month was an easy and obvious choice, but still there were so many GREAT artworks! Well done, artists - all of them! Prince William County artists and art groups got talent!

Drum roll please...

1. 1st Place is Tom Payne's "Vermeer's Vision"

The master artist Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), was a Dutch painter that created the "Girl with a Pearl Earring" which was what inspired Tom Payne's "Vermeer's Vision", which as Tom says is "Girl with a Pearl Earring" meets African Cyborg Queen. Update Thursday, January 26, 2023 9:25pm - this painting SOLD, contact Tom Payne for prints. https://www.payne-relief-artworx.com/

2. Second Place is Bettie Sperty's "Sweet Dreams"

Bettie Sperty's painting was inspired by the artist René François Ghislain Magritte (1898-1967) who "was a Belgian surrealist artist known for his depictions of familiar objects in unfamiliar, unexpected contexts, which often provoked questions about the nature and boundaries of reality and representation." (-Wikipedia)

3. Tied for Third Place are Kate Brogdon's " Redwood Forest Nymph Losing Hope" and Donna Liguria's "Only God Can Make a Tree"

Kate Brogdon's " Redwood Forest Nymph Losing Hope"

"This piece continues my series of nymphs: strong female guardians of a complex environment she fills with energy.  The redwood tree nymph is losing hope in the face of threats to her tree and the forest, as continued degradation and fragmentation reduce the ability of forests to shelter valuable ecosystems and mitigate warming.  Candy wrappers are the base of the image providing shine and sparkle, but also highlight the often invisible trash filing our natural areas.  The nymph is drawn in pencil and the environment is a photograph  with paint." - Kate Brogdon

Donna Liguria's "Only God Can Make a Tree"

"The master creator and painter, God, inspired my rendition of a looking up at a tree. There is a squirrel, 2 birds, and a couple of lady bugs sprinkled around the canvas." - Donna Liguria

Please note that all of the artwork at the gallery is for sale if you are interested.

After the Master's Style will only be up until Sunday, January 29, so come out and enjoy the show. It is FREE to come in and view the art. The next art show beginning on Wednesday, February 1 and running until Feb 26 is "African American Voices and Visions". And the voting will start all over again.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all that visited and voted.

Post 275: What's On Your Easel Right Now?

What's On Your Easel Right Now?

Periodically I ask the Prince William Art Society what is on their easel, PC, or camera right now that they are working on. Here are their answers to the question.

Gotta Keep Creating!

PWAS artists are always creating, always working on something new. We have commissions to finish, possible gifts to certain people or functions, gallery themed deadlines to meet and more. And often the art on our easel is for fun or discovery, we just MUST, create! Here is what is on the easel right now for these members.

Scott McDonald

This is what’s on my easel. It’s a gesso under painting for a Holiday floral. I’ll be painting this on Sunday during my docent duty at the gallery. You’ll be able to see the finished painting at the PWAS Holiday party.

Ann McCarty

This is a study for a larger version. Working on loosening my brush work and stressing less over photorealism. I am still working on that big orange boat that I posted here last publication.  Oy vey!

Mark Murphy

After seeing some of the beautiful portraits in the gallery, I decided to give colored pencils a try.  So far I've created two fun pieces, one with donuts and one with pieces of cheesecake.  At the Naval Academy, one of my nicknames was "dessert man" so I thought this subject would be appropriate for a series of renderings.  I may call it "Just Desserts".  I'm also considering watercolor versions of these subjects in a similarly realistic style to investigate which medium I prefer for this type of art.

Michelle Baker

Looking into 2023: Started a series of works last in recognition of Black History month show. I love the blues sound and blue paint. Have not titled this piece but I see movement and dancers. Waiting until the right words come to me or feel it is finished before I  select a title.

Maureen Guillot

This painting started as a still life set up and now I'm finishing it at home from a picture.   I only use three primary colors, plus white and use a rose color underpainting.  I am able to make all the colors I need with three colors.

Linda Nedilsky

What's on my Easel? A painting I have tried to finish since December 3 for my upcoming show in January at McCall's Gallery.

I started this painting and various roadblocks were put in my path that forced me to set it aside until last night.

I am about half way done with it at this point and hoping to finish this evening.

Donna Liguria

This is a painting I have worked on periodically for a couple of months in advance of the February 2023 art show at Open Space Arts for Black History month. Still a lot of work to do on it, but it is Ben's Chili Bowl at 1213 U St. N.W. Washington, DC 20009, 16x20 on canvas, in Acrylics.

Ben and Virginia Ali started Ben's Chili Bowl in 1958 and is, to this day, the go-to place to eat when visiting DC - from politicians to the famous to everyday folks.

Evelyn Chatters

This is on my easel right now. There are layers of black, yellow, red ,and green and it has a lot of texture. It looks a little frightening, but with acrylic pours, sometimes the results are surprising!

Madelyn (Mickey) Winslow

This is a study for a larger version  This is a dog portrait that I just finished painting for a client. It’s on an 8x8” wrapped canvas. Acrylic. I am a long-time member of PWAS - joined when we were the Woodbridge Art Guild. Love to paint dog & cat portraits and lighthouses. Also flowers & scenic places.

Otis Stanley

This is called "Goldfish Blues"

Tom Payne

Here’s a jpg of what is on my Cintiq “easel” today. I call it “Afro Cyborg”. It’s about halfway finished. She will have a helmet and will be adorned with additional mechanical elements that will give her super human powers. I’m painting her by hand in Photoshop. She needs a name. Any suggestions PWAS???

Saul Roldan

I am painting my granddaughter

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
