Post 577: A PWAS Art Reception at the ARTfactory for BoR Part 1

A PWAS Art Reception at the ARTfactory for BoR - Part 1

Saturday, June 7, 2025 At the ARTfactory in Manassas, VA. The art reception took place for the Prince William Art Society sponsored Best of the Region Fine Art Show and Sale (BoR) that opened June 3 and will run until June 15. The winners were crowned with beautiful ribbons and the artists were presented with their prizes. Everyone enjoyed the evening of art, artists, friends, family, art enthusiasts, food and beverages.

The historic ARTfactory at 9419 Battle Street, Manassas, VA

It Takes a Village To Do an Art Show

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) is the main sponsors and creators of this art show. Having a Best of the Region art show has been on the back burner for a core group of PWAS members for several years. The core group even held a few meetings and planning sessions on how to proceed; alas, the Best of Show went into hibernation for a period of time. The opportunity presented itself to go on with the show in early 2025 - thus the concept of the show was ON!

Best of the Region Fine Art Show and Sale at the ARTfactory June 3-15, 2025

The PWAS Board BoR Committee met at several locations and on Zoom to build the plan and goals, the budget, and a rather large "To-Do List". We gathered other sponsors to help offset some of the costs and a huge thank you to the following organizations and individuals:

  • The ARTfactory - Manassas, VA with a HUGE THANK YOU to Jordan Exum (the ARTfactory Gallery Director), Teresa Lopez, and to the entire Staff!!!
  • Creative Brush Studios - Manassas, VA - Mary Reilly (Founder, Owner, Artist)
  • Manassas Art Guild (MAG) - Manassas, VA - Laura Lavarnway (MAG President)
  • Wegmans - Woodbridge, VA
  • Jason D Brandt, DDS - Woodbridge, VA
  • Prince William County Arts Council (PWCAC)

And we had many PWAS members that helped in so many ways...we have so much appreciation and love for each and every one:

  • Sandra McClelland Lewin - Interim PWAS President, and her husband John Lewin
  • Tom Payne - PWAS Member-at-large, and his wife, Becky Payne
  • Bettie Sperty - PWAS Secretary, and her husband, Brian Sperty
  • Staci Blanchard - PWAS PWCAC Representative
  • Eric Ndofor - PWAS Treasurer
  • Otis Stanley - our art reception photographer
  • Mark Clifton
  • Mark Murphy
  • Evelyn Chatters
  • Anna Gatling
  • Maria Briganti
  • Tes Sain
  • Kelly Haneklau
  • Sheri Herrick and her husband, Mike Herrick

On With the Show

The ever important Art Drop Off dates worked out over May 31 and June 1 at the ARTfactory. The show opened on June 3 and our juror, Catherine Hillis made an early incognito visit to the gallery to see the artwork in person. It's that final "see the art in person" that sealed her choices for the best works.

Unfortunately, our juror could not attend the art reception but she sent along the speech she had planned to give along with the reasons why she selected the BoR award winners, which Tom Payne so wonderfully read to the reception attendees.

Catherine Hillis

Our BoR artists were nearly all in attendance! We missed you if you couldn't make it!

Participating Artists

We had an exceptional turn out - not only in artists for the Best of the Region, but turn out for the art reception! Only a few of the artists couldn't be there, but here is the entire list of the 40 artists that had at least one piece in the show:

Absku, Asia Anderson, Danielle Bancroft, Zee Berrios, Erik Bohn, Jill Brabant, Mark Clifton, Jaclyn Del Vacchio, Scott Elliott, Mike Flynn, Michele Frantz, Anna Gatling, Andreia Gliga, Kelly Haneklau, Janet Hansen Martinet, John Hartt, Sheri Herrick, Corban Hubler, Rebekah Keener, Debra Keirce, Donna Liguria, Russ Mardon, Ann McCarty, Sandra McClelland-Lewin, Stephanie McGee, Nicki Mulligan, Mark Murphy, Eric Ndofor, Marina Olchevskaia, Anna Polanco, Aurea, Christine Raymond, Mary Reilly, Carol Rusaw, Maria Theresa “Tes” Sain, Bettie Sperty, Lisa Stewart, Halle Strosser, Emily Thomson, Suzanne Yurdin

We had a total of 66 artists enter 177 artworks of which 63 were chosen by our juror to show at the ARTfactory. The artists came from almost every nook and cranny, many studios and art spaces from all around the Northern Virginia areas.

Photos from the art reception and show were taken by PWAS Member Otis Stanley. This single blog post could not hold them all so I'll have at least a Part 2...maybe a Part 3 over the next day or so, but I'll link them together.

Let us begin with the Best of the Region Winners

First Place Winner - Mike Flynn of Gainsville, VA with his watercolor painting "Bull Run"

Post 571: The Jewell Pratt Burns Scholarship Award Night

The Jewell Pratt Burns Scholarship Award Night

In May for many years, the Prince William Art Society announces and awards the winner(s) of our annual Jewell Pratt Burns Scholarship Award by celebrating at our monthly meeting. This Monday, May 26 is the day to award the Scholarship, so come and celebrate with us.

From May 2023: The Jewell Pratt Burns Scholarship Award presentation. Featured l-r: 2023 PWAS President Ana Quispe, Jewell Pratt Burns, and the 2023 Scholarship recipient Awaneh Sawaneh

PWAS Meeting Monday, May 26, 2025 7:30pm

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) offers a Scholarship each year for $1,000 to be used toward tuition, books, art supplies or anything that helps make school more affordable. Applicants submit an essay, a teacher's letter of recommendation, and digital images of their art. They bring original works to an interview with a panel of Prince William Art Society artists where they discuss their use of mediums, styles, and future goals in the art community. The application process is excellent practice for many later experiences within the art world, and the monetary award provides meaningful help at this pivotal time.

One of the most rewarding moments for PWAS members has been meeting these talented young students and knowing we were able to help this member of the next generation of artists - ensuring all our futures will be a little bit brighter and more creative. Attend the membership meeting this May 26th to help celebrate our 2025 student scholarship winner, Faith Garcia Young. Support her as she receives the award, talk with her and her family over cake and ice cream, and enjoy being a part of this celebration.

Membership meetings are held at the Tall Oaks Community Center, 12298 Cotton Mill Dr., Lakeridge, VA 22192. Meetings start at 7:30 pm. All programs are free and open to the public, who are cordially invited to attend.

A Business Meeting Too

Following the Scholarship ceremony, the PWAS members will go over some of the upcoming events, shows and any announcements. A big topic of conversation is our current PWAS Member Art Exhibit showing at the ARTfactory in Manassas May 15- 30 followed by the Best of the Region Fine Art Show and Sale also at the ARTfactory June 3-15. The Art Reception for the Best of show is June 7. The Prince William Art Society is sponsoring the Best of the Region Show and features artists from all over the Northern Virginia areas.

Post 537: PWAS Wants a Gallery Space

PWAS Wants a Gallery Space

Updated as of February 18, 2025

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) is an art group in Virginia, that began in 1971 in Prince William County. The group is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization of artists from in and all around the county. The art group meets monthly, hosts and attends art events, arranges workshops, occasionally has a field trip, has members that get together and paint outdoors, and promotes art throughout the area. There's one thing missing in their repertoire. An art gallery home.

PWAS History

PWAS has an interesting history that you can read about here. As events have happened, this post has been updated to show some major milestones. See

Post 1: About PWAS - A History of a Prince William County Art Group

Editorial What I Would Like to See at PWAS - thoughts from some PWAS members about the future of the art group.

The Arts

One thing that PWAS has seen over the years in Prince William County is the lower emphasis in the visual arts in the area. The Arts is a huge subject much like an English muffin with LOTS of nooks and crannies.

Have a look at Britannica's description of The Arts: "...modes of expression that use skill or imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others.

Traditional categories within the arts include literature (including poetry, drama, story, and so on), the visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.), the graphic arts (painting, drawing, design, and other forms expressed on flat surfaces), the plastic arts (sculpture, modeling), the decorative arts (enamelwork, furniture design, mosaic, etc.), the performing arts (theatre, dance, music), music (as composition), and architecture (often including interior design)."

It seems that more attention is put in the direction of the performing arts of music, dance and theatre in Prince William County than is placed on the visual side. Yet, on the walls in most people's homes, what do we find on our walls where we live? Artwork we love. And where do you go to find artwork created by local artists? Good question here in Woodbridge, Virginia.

The Prince William Art Society wants an art gallery. Our artist members are creating art every day that we want to share with you. We want an art space to call our own, preferably on a long-term basis. And by 'our own' I mean not only the art group, but the we the people of Prince William County.

What Makes a Great Spot for an Art Gallery?

There are various business models for art galleries such as a Nonprofit Gallery, a Commercial Gallery, Artist Cooperatives, a Pop-up Gallery, and there are Online Galleries. PWAS understands the need for their niche in a nonprofit gallery focusing on local visual artists with a target market for art buyers needing a supply of art sources in Prince William County.

Art Audience - will include individuals and tourists, art collectors and investors, designers and architects, schools and educational institutions, corporate entities and hospitals looking for art decor, and the possibility of businesses searching for beautiful spaces for their corporate events.

  • How about going for a walk with a date and visiting an art gallery?
  • What about having an art event for your business with great art set as your background?

Location - an art gallery is a building to house the art within, to the extent and degree of all The Arts that it can hold and the administrators of that space can manage under one roof. There is a question of a free standing space 'out somewhere' as opposed to a space with a lot of visibility within or near other businesses. We live here in Northern Virginia - where all real estate is expensive. There could be pros and cons with any space or building, but find it we must. A compromise of some sort is more than likely where we will end up.

  • Might the location consider allowances for a 501(c)3 non-profit organization?
  • Will the location be a temporary popup art show space for a set limited time?
  • Can the art group negotiate a permanent location as an art gallery?
  • Does the location have room for growth?
  • Can a building fund be engaged for a gallery?

Access and Exposure - ease of getting in and out of the area is a consideration as well as if you can see it from the road or main traffic areas.

Parking - the availability of having space to park plenty of vehicles is needed for a good gallery space to hold art receptions and events, meetings, have classes and workshops, have the possibility to be multi functional, so that artists and art lovers have plenty of parking.

Foot Traffic - ideally, having pedestrians walking around to shop, go out to eat, and just do all the things that draw people to a location helps a gallery to promote itself.

Growth - having an art space that can grow and expand with the artistic needs of the art group and the county would be an amazing thing. Being able to host annual art competitions, evolving art exhibits and more creatives, well you know creative people see beyond limitations.

The Prince William Art Society wants enough space for growth to:

  • Hang monthly art shows, and even overlapping art shows and competitions as well as large exhibits and mixed media.
  • Give art classes, workshops, and demos - if not daily, at least weekly with decent class sizes.
  • Have art merchandise for sale along with the art on the walls, maybe even art supplies for recycling.
  • Hold art meetings, have space for rental purposes for other organizations.
  • Hold art receptions, meet the artists, and other activities for the public or private groups.
  • Schedule visits from local student group field trips to tour our gallery space and more.
  • Storage space for PWAS art equipment for shows like our gridwalls, tents, etc.
  • This list can grow too!

What Can You Do to Help PWAS Find a Home?

One thing that you can do while traveling, shopping, visiting, and wandering around Prince William County is keep your eyes open. As a PWAS member, we ask that you let the PWAS Board know if you see a building or a space for lease or rent. Please do this:

  • Take pictures (of the front, the area)
  • Get the phone number!
  • Get the address, shopping center, location!
  • Get the leasing agent name, company (snap a pic of the signage)

If you are able to actually look in the windows, describe what you see. Although art galleries need walls to hang said art, depending on the space, there are ways to create temporary walls that may work as an alternative to lots of windows, small rooms, or other challenges.

Alternatively, if you know someone who knows someone that knows someplace, let us know.

board@PrinceWilliamArtSociety.com

Send the information to the PWAS Admin and they will take the info from there and do the work of making contact and exploring the potential spot.

Post 530: January is Join PWAS Time

January is (Re)Join PWAS Time

Many an artist might say "I wish I knew then what I know now", and we often say that right? Almost any art group near you should have opportunities for an adult artist to join, get involved, and stretch their artistic reach right where they live. The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) offers local artists ways to get involved and get their art "out there" as well as tons of benefits for growth, learning, and sharing.

What is PWAS?

The Prince William Art Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization of local artists, living in and around Prince William County, Virginia. The art group's mission is to promote the understanding, creation and exhibition of the visual fine arts - mainly in PWC, but we might be found anywhere in the area as well.

PWAS began in 1971, making it the oldest art group in Prince William County. A scholarship program was begun in 2008, called the Jewell Pratt Burns Art Scholarship. In 2024, PWAS began offering free and various art workshops around Prince William County.

Learn more about PWAS on our website:  https://www.princewilliamartsociety.com/ and read this blog post too https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/2025/01/post-525-email-from-pwas-interim.html

Why Join PWAS?

Often it is easier to do and learn all of the things an artist needs to do to be seen by being in an art group than as a single artist trying to do everything all by yourself, even though we all wish we could simply just make our art. Being in an art group, the artist would certainly have access to many more opportunities! See Artist NTK

The Prince William Art Society is a very diverse collection of artists from every background and skill level - beginner artists to those that have been creating art for many years. We have art teachers, graphic artists, digital artists, exceptional oil, acrylic, and watercolor painters and a wide range of mixed media artists. PWAS has artists that are self-taught to members that have college art degrees. A common desire of the PWAS members is to share their knowledge as well as learn from each other, including exploring new creative avenues.

Many members join with the desire to show their art but don't know how or where to begin, so join PWAS for:

For the Art of it!

  • Show off your art - at shows, galleries, festivals, wineries, libraries, and more.
    • Some shows may be juried, while many shows are open.
  • Plein Air Painting - a group within PWAS that gets outdoors and paints!
  • Learn more - about anything and everything art, including the presentation of art.
  • Networking opportunities - make connections with artists and art lovers.
  • Sharing of local and nearby, potential art opportunities to apply to.
  • Expand your artistic reach, outlook, and potential.
  • Learn how to get involved - in helping other artists, in giving back, and more.

For the Activities!

  • Monthly Meetings
  • Presentations
  • Workshops and Classes
  • Go on a Field Trip
  • Teaching Opportunities

 For the Fun of it!

  • Socialize with fellow artists!
  • That field trip last year to the National Gallery of Art was fantastic!
  • Develop art friendships that will cheer you on!
  • Our annual PWAS Christmas party!
  • How about a future PWAS picnic?

For the Future of Art in PWC!

  • There are many things on the radar for the Prince William Art Society including new art shows and locations to show our art. There are some GREAT things on the horizon and YOU could be a part of it!
  • Get involved in the search for our new gallery space. We want our own gallery space - we'll go short term if we need to but long term IS the goal.
  • Get involved - especially if YOU have skills to share with fellow artists or a skill needed to help promote PWAS!
  • At the end of 2025 a new Board will be voted on - we need YOU and your skills!
  • Help us improve the art scene in Prince William County.

Meetings are the fourth Monday of the month at 7:30pm and typically include a program with a guest speaker - to learn something new, or may be a show and tell session or even a special surprise! Our meetings are held here:

The Tall Oaks Community Center
12208 Cotton Mill Road
Woodbridge, VA

Post 525: An Email From the PWAS Interim President

An Email From the PWAS Interim President

An email from the Prince William Art Society Interim President, Sandra McClelland Lewin to the PWAS Members (and future members), recapping this past year and looking forward to 2025.

A Note from PWAS

Dear PWAS Members,

As we bid goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one, it is time to reflect on the lessons we've learned, challenges we've overcome, and the memories we've made. This past year has been a productive one for PWAS contributing to our growth and development. We’ve doubled our membership, had numerous pop-up art shows as well as month-long exhibits such as the Winery at Sunshine Ridge, the Montclair Library, and the Three Fox Vineyard and Brewery. Our website now features the ability to sell our artwork online as well as pay our dues and make donations. The free art classes provided to both our members and non-members have been extremely successful. The field trip to the National Gallery of Art was educational and provided us an opportunity to get to know members of the Manassas Art Guild who joined us on the trip. The classes and field trip were made possible by grant money from the Prince William County Arts Council (PWCAC). We have a newly established Plein-Air group that is meeting to paint throughout the area. The monthly meetings offered helpful programs by guest speakers, Show and Tell nights, and even a video reveal for members that was put online. Our year-end Holiday celebration was a fun-filled night featuring live music from our own members, games, great food, comradery and acknowledgement of our top volunteers.

How do we top that in the coming year? With the help of members like you, we can expand our outreach, provide more opportunities to sell our art, and increase our skills and knowledge of the business of art. We already have the Bull Run library show set to start in January and the Art Factory show is set to start in May. We’ve applied to be juried into a show at the Workhouse Center for the Arts in Lorton and await their decision. Our main objective for the coming year is to use our grant funds to provide a gallery for our daily use. The search is on to find that special place.

For me, the best part of being a member of PWAS is the chance to connect with like-minded, creative people. We gain so much from one another whether it be techniques, opportunities for exhibits, or simply encouragement for stretching our abilities. So, here’s to the adventures awaiting us in 2025! We have a blank canvas upon which we can paint our dreams and create a masterpiece.
