Post 393: PWAS Meeting with Guest Kathleen Best Gillmann August 28, 2023

PWAS Meeting with Guest Kathleen Best Gillmann August 28, 2023

The Prince William Art Society meets monthly on the 4th Monday of the month at the Tall Oaks Community Center on the corner of Cotton Mill and Hedges Run in Woodbridge, VA. (The pool house, sort of). We had the BEST guest artist this past meeting, Kathleen Best Gillmann. She is currently showing at the Lorton Workhouse among other places.

Mixed Media

Ms Gillmann walked the members through several of her artworks, describing and answering questions about how she created them, using pastels and colored pencils. Everyone enjoyed her artwork and had a bunch of questions!

The Artistry Spin Blog post found here describes Kathleen's background https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/2023/08/post-385-pwas-meeting-guest-artist.html

After Kathleen's presentation, everyone enjoyed the snack and beverages, and a little social time before the Board started the "business" side of the PWAS meetings, talking about our upcoming shows and adventures.

Post 371: Art Group Meeting and Agenda, Prince William Art Society July 24, 2023

Art Group Meeting and Agenda, Prince William Art Society July 24, 2023

On July 24 at 7:30 pm the Prince William Art Society will meet at the Tall Oaks Community Center, 12298 Cotton Mill Dr, Woodbridge, VA 22192. We will begin the meeting with a program by Robert Friedenberg, who will present his work and discuss his technical and artistic process. He says "Drawing has been my lifelong hobby and passion since I was pursuing my PhD in theoretical nuclear physics. I graduated in 1976 and worked as a physicist, engineer, software developer, consultant, and executive in various fields and industries for nearly 50 years, before turning my attention to art full-time in 2023."

"As an artist, I create very detailed black and white pen and ink drawings using a .25mm Rapidograph, a technical pen that allows me to produce intricate and precise lines and shapes. My work incorporates a wide range of themes, from natural scenery to mechanical devices to science fiction and fantasy. I also embed pictures, words, symbols, equations, and other elements into my drawings to add depth, texture, and interest, and to engage the viewer on a long-term basis. Some of my drawings even feature the equations from my PhD dissertation, reflecting my fascination with physics and mathematics. My mission is to capture and manipulate my mind's wanderings and to keep you looking and always finding something new." Bob's work can be viewed in person at the Artists' Undertaking in Occoquan, or online at https://www.notwolfproductions.com/.

Programs are free and open to the public, who are welcome to attend. Following programs there is a brief change over with refreshments available, then there is a business meeting which the public may attend if desired.

Take a look at some of Bob's work...click on them for a larger view! WOW!

Post 364: PWAS Meeting with Anna Gatling

PWAS Meeting with Anna Gatling

Monday, June 26, 2023. The Prince William Art Society met for their monthly 4th Monday of the month meeting at the Tall Oaks Community Center in Woodbridge, Virginia and featured guest speaker, PWAS member Anna Gatling.

Colors Do Something to People

Anna told of her background - where she grew up and her art experiences in her wonderful way, explaining her art journey thus far in her life. Like many artists, when lock down happened in early 2020, after a trip to Michael's and stocking up on all things art supplies, Anna reintroduced herself to her love of art. (Insert here that it would have been an great time to have purchased stock in Michaels!)

She soon joined PWAS, followed by showing her art at Open Space Arts (OSA). She told of having people respond to her artwork, noting that as people came into the gallery they occasionally would make a beeline toward one of her art pieces and as Anna stated, "Colors do something to people".

PWAS members enjoyed her program and her art and I'll take the liberty to also show one of the OSA gallery's most favorite art pieces shown that you may recall, as it has been sold - at the end of this post. Her program in pictures...

Anna showed some of her watercolor pieces first...

Then Anna moved into her exploration of paint pouring and adding creative and interesting embellishments...

And finally, her art ventured into the challenges of realism...

If you've been over to Open Space Arts this year, you may have seen this artwork by Anna Gatling. The piece is called "Cotton and Chain" and won first place in our February People's Choice Awards 2023.

It was a fun program, thank you Anna!

A recent change in PWAS meetings starts with our featured speaker artist, refreshments, then we attend to the business side of the Prince William Art Society. As always, the public is invited. If you are interested in being a part of PWAS, we have a monthly meeting on the 4th Monday of the month at 7:30pm at the Tall Oaks Community Center on the corner of Cotton Mill and Hedges Run off of Old Bridge Road in Woodbridge.
