Post 268: Open Space Arts Training with Penny Shaw

Open Space Arts Training with Penny Shaw

Many galleries, art shows and art groups are run by the volunteer members and other art lovers that just want to share not only their art, but the art created by others. The gallery Open Space Arts is peopled by such volunteers. And quite often ARE the artists that have art up at the current art show.

Art Gallery Training

How does a volunteer learn the nuances of running a gallery?
How do they ring up a sale?
What do they say to the visitors?
How do you open, close?

There are those questions and so many more, that the volunteer, docent or helper will need to know to answer questions from the visitors and to properly credit an art sale when a visitor wants to purchase art.

Tony Muller videoed the last training session given by Penny Shaw on November 12. Here is that video:

The agenda items include introductions, history of OSA and PWAS, work procedures,  shifts, where to find information,  script to use when greeting visitors, opening and closing procedures.

Questions Often Asked

1. When did OSA start?

Quick History of Open Space Arts - OSA was first opened as an art gallery on Friday, November 26, 2021 through Sunday, November 28, 2021. The community loved it so much, the Prince William Art Society (PWAS), that had their art on display, was asked to stretch the show until mid December 2021.

Then in early 2022, PWCAC - the Prince William County Arts Council approached PWAS again and asked if we would manage the gallery with the idea of promoting the art of ALL Prince William County artists. The idea would include all artists, over the age of 18. All of the art would be juried in to show. The artists needed to be a resident of PWC OR they could be a member of a PWC art group.

Thus, Open Space Arts began showing the art of local artists in April 2022.

2. Do I Need to Take the Training Session?

We encourage all volunteers to take the training in person as there are some "on the job" lessons that can only be asked, answered, addressed while at the gallery, in person. It is also understood that the timing may be off when a person joins or needs to start at the gallery, hence the need for this video. We also encourage any newer folks to volunteer when a more veteran volunteer is on a shift to learn even more.

*Please note that this post and video are available to anyone online, but no information is posted that is security or private to PWCAC, PWAS or OSA.

Post 265: Kathy Cornwell's Miriam Ahmed Interview

You'll Never Guess what Miriam Ahmed Uses in her Mixed Media Artwork

PWAS is filled with talented and interesting artists, and Miriam Ahmed exemplifies this perfectly. She is an accomplished graphic designer, professor of graphic design, and visual artist.

I sat down for an inspiring interview with Miriam (posted later in this blog post), and I hope you'll enjoy watching it. We discuss things like:

  • Her history with graphic design, and what it's like to work with young designers
  • Miriam's fascinating research on the intersection of graphic design, ethics, and diversity, as well as the impact of millennials on our culture
  • Miriam's fine art practice and unusual materials
  • Why Miriam joined PWAS
  • How her fine art work differs from her work as a graphic designer
  • And more!

Miriam's Art Reflects Her Love of the Beach

Are you a beach lover? Miriam's fine art practice focuses almost exclusively on the beach, which is part of her personal history. She studies and celebrates the wide variety of textures and colors of sand and shells—and she uses these materials in her visual art!

Miriam juxtaposes different types of sand and shells in her mixed media acrylic artworks. In the interview, she describes how she creates these large-scale artworks when the urge strikes her.

Here are some examples of her beach-inspired artworks:

A Master of Graphic Design

Miriam's graphic design skills are top-notch, and she's been teaching graphic design for over a decade! She has authored many academic papers on graphic design and given lectures on the topic. You can learn more about her work at https://www.miryum.com/

Here are a few examples of Miriam's graphic design work:

Post 264: Tony Muller's Workshop

Tony Muller's Workshop

Last Saturday, November 12, 2022, Tony Muller had a workshop on "Augmented Reality and the application to art world". Here is how he described the workshop and his presentation notes along with some pictures from the day.

Tony: We first discussed the history of AR, what it is, and what it's not. Then a quick overview of how it's being used on every day life.

Then we explored the historical use of AR in various art forms - dance, theatre, and finally static gallery pieces.

The last bit of the workshop provided 3 examples of AR-enhanced artworks using the app Artivive.

I think we had about 25 attendees throughout the day and over 100 viewings on the Artivive app.
