Post 129: Juried Art Shows the Few, the Proud, the Chosen

Juried Art Shows: the Few, the Proud, the Chosen

Now that's just a play on a title so don't go throwing a tube of paint at me. It was that or the theme to The Sopranos "Woke Up this Morning" and the part "Mama always said you'd be the chosen one..."

I am very sure that nearly every artist out there and upcoming will have had some anxiety over submitting their art for an art show, a juried show, or an art "competition" at some point.

So you took the leap and clicked "Submit" to an art show. FANTASTIC, congratulations! Just remember...

You do your art for many reasons, and I suspect that for the most part, you do it for YOU. You love being creative, you like what you create. You find it relaxing and maybe there will come a point when you want to show it to someone else and not just be forever hanging on your mom's refrigerator (so to speak). I know, often our mom's ARE our biggest fans, though and God Bless them for it!

What Matters Most When Entering an Art Show?

  • Don't assume that if chosen to be in an art show that it means automatic artistic success.
  • Don't assume that if NOT chosen to be in an art show means that your artwork isn't good.
  • If your artwork fails to be chosen to be in an art show, scratch that, if your artwork is not accepted to be in an art show, brush it off. Do not take it as a rejection of you or your artwork.

Whether it is a single judge or a group of artists that are the jurors for that show, it is THEIR choice. We cannot get in their heads to know why they chose an art piece and don't let their decision get in your head. They may have reviewed hundreds of other pieces of art work from artists from everywhere and they chose what appealed to their personal choice, the show criteria, lots of things.

The single most important thing about getting your art entered in a show, whether it is chosen to hang, wins an award, or even if it is NOT juried into that art show, is the NETWORKING AT THE SHOW, the connections that you can make. Whether you get in the show or not, GO to the SHOW. Mingle with the other artists and talk, talk, talk. Ask questions. LEARN.

And if feedback IS offered, LISTEN. True, you do you but if that feedback works for you, take it and run with it.

Let's Go to the Art Videos

Don't believe me? Well here are some great videos with some artists telling you the same thing and offering important tips.

More Blog Posts About Juried Art Shows

Here at the Prince William Art Society and our blog, we thrive on helping new artists learn more about getting into the art world and getting their artwork "out there". Here are a couple more posts about juried art shows.

What is a JotForm? What is a Call for Art?

Most of all with this blog post, I just wanted to offer that many artists, even those painting for YEARS, can tell stories of artwork that was not accepted in an art show. But that did not ever stop them from trying to enter the next show.

AND there WILL be more art shows.

Stonebridge Open Space Arts will have more Calls for Art going forward. And if you are an artist living in Prince William County or an Art Group in PWC, there is no fee to enter the shows. Hopefully, we see you the next time!

Do you have an art show story to tell?

Post 128: Composition 2. Rule of Odds

Composition: The Rule of Odds

Part 2 of my series on Composition

Many of the "rules" of photography and cinematography are also used in art - drawing and painting. Let's take a look at the Rule of Odds and no, I am not talking about ice cream cones with eyes, that is quite normal in the art world. My previous blog post on Composition was on the Rule of Thirds, now let's look at the Odds.

Odd Numbers and Even Numbers

As many artists refuse to or rarely follow any 'rules', the composition of things are more like guidelines so that your photographs, your art is visually more interesting to look at. So how you place the elements on your canvas can take it up to another level by at least taking the guidelines into consideration.

Basically, the Rule of Odds is that whenever possible, your composition will be better with an odd number of objects than an even number of objects.

One, although the "Loneliest Number", is a nicer focus in a very busy scene.
Three flower vases are better than two.
Five lemons are more interesting than four.
Seven golfballs might be confusing on the green, but on a canvas, better for the eye to view.

Even in decorating, odd numbers of things or collections of similar things are easier to view than even numbers. Our brains try to unconsciously group things with even numbers into pairs. Odd numbered objects has the tendency to hold the eye a little longer, viewing the individual elements on the canvas.

Give it a try. Go to your favorite still life painting - I bet it is composed of an odd number of objects. Unless the artist is a rule breaker of course...

Again, give it a try in your next composition. Go ahead, be "odd".

Post 126: Prince William Art Society - An Art Group with 2 Galleries

Prince William Art Society - An Art Group with Galleries x2

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) is a non-profit group of artists based in Woodbridge, Virginia. The group will be celebrating 51 years this summer and celebrating that we now have TWO galleries to show art! Many, many thank you's to Herb Williams of PWC Parks and Rec and JBG Smith - Anastasia Podorski, their Senior Property Manager for the use of Open Space Arts!

About PWAS

PWAS was formed in 1971 with the purpose of promoting the appreciation of visual art and fine crafts; gaining recognition and publicity for the work of local artists; and providing a variety of educational art programs and fine art exhibits to the Prince William community.

PWAS meets once a month on the 4th Monday of the month at Tall Oaks Community Center 12298 Cotton Mill Drive, Lake Ridge, VA 22192.

PWAS artists have the option to show their art at two locations:

  1. Clearbrook Center of the Arts - 2230 B Tackett’s Mill Drive Lake Ridge, VA 22192. Hours: 1-4pm Saturdays and Sundays

  2. Stonebridge Open Space Arts - 15000 Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge, VA - OPENING April 2, 2022! Hours: Wednesday - Saturday 12-7pm and Sunday 12-5pm

Some artists show at both locations, others choose one or the other.

Stonebridge Open Space Arts - all artwork will be entered via a form when the "Call for Art" is sent and juried into the gallery, and must follow the standard hanging, wiring, and presentation guidelines. Art Shows will change approximately monthly, with a plethora of art shows and events scheduled for the rest of the year.

The first Art Show scheduled will be called "Coloring the County" and will feature the artwork of artists from all over Prince William County and the members of PWC art groups. This show will open Saturday, April 2, 2022.

Area artists will be volunteering time at the gallery, answering visitor questions and possibly painting! Get to know your favorite artists and vote for your favorite art piece as "People's Choice".

For the local PWC artists, there is NO FEE to enter your art! BY THE WAY, the Call for Art for this April 2 show closes THIS Saturday, March 19. See https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/2022/03/post-121-pwas-events-upcoming-call-for.html and get your art entered ASAP!

Clearbrook Center of the Arts - PWAS has been granted the use of this space for several years now by the wonderful folks at Tackett's Mill Shopping Center in Lakeridge. John Wooten and his family have been a blessing to us all! The gallery is on the side near the pond, before The Bee Store and near the new Hector's restaurant.

The artwork is not juried at Clearbrook, but the artwork as well as prints must follow the standard hanging, wiring and presentation guidelines as above. Artwork is changed out in the gallery bi-monthly and a new theme wall option is named. The artwork changeover occurs in January, March, May, July, September, and November. There is no fee to hang artwork at the gallery but artist members will need to volunteer a 1-2 weekend days a month to help out at the gallery.

What is a Jury Process?

I have a blog post called A Juried Art Show - see if this covers what you need to know!

Well, we certainly hope to see you at our galleries! Stop in and say hello and have a look around. Let us know how you heard about us too!

Post 125: Stonebridge Open Space Arts - A Place for the Art of PWC

Stonebridge Open Space Arts - A Place for the Art of PWC

A little history of how Stonebridge Open Space Arts, located at 15000 Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge, Virginia, came to be and where it is going.

OPEN SPACE ARTS at Stonebridge Potomac Town Center PRESENTED BY PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL

From the annual Stonebridge Tree-Lighting Holiday Celebration to “Artists Sunday,” the national event that took place in many cities around the country on November 28th, 2021; Residents and Visitors of Prince William County were excited to both see and visit the unexpected “Open Space Arts” gallery and the creative works and talents of local artists presented by PWC Arts Council (PWCAC) in conjunction with JBG Smith over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.

The PWCAC Summary

On November 26, 2021, the Prince William County Arts Council members participated in the Tree-Lighting event at the Stonebridge shops of Potomac Town Center in Woodbridge, VA. The annual event hosted well over 500 guests and residents from around the County and featured the local talents of Woodbridge Dance Academy, TEMA Choir USA, Ordway Dance Conservatory, New Dominion Choraliers, Susan & Stephen Acoustics, Suburban Gypsies Belly Dancers, along with a host of street performers that included everything from Ice Carvers, Juggling Unicyclists, Horse and Buggy rides, and so much more.

JBG Smith Management and Leasing Agent Offered the space of the vacant shop at 15000 Potomac Town Place #114 for the Arts Council to utilize for an art/gallery exhibit and performance space during the Tree Lighting event that carried over into the weekend of the “Artists Sunday” (Shop with your favorite local artists), a national event that was presented across the country. "Artists Sunday" was a response to supporting local artists and a way to connect to consumers through art. The Black Friday for the art world became "Artists Sunday."

The name Open Space Arts was utilized to give the visitors the feel that all creative arts were welcome and invited. This idea worked well as not only did visitors come in to see the art work, they also asked questions about the various arts disciplines and how they could themselves get involved, or involve their children. This gave us a great opportunity to offer information about the many arts organizations locally that offered classes, in addition to connecting the community to the offerings of DPRT both verbally and through the collection of information that each of the members provided on their organizations through fliers and brochures.

With a collection of over 80 pieces of culturally diverse visual art on display, artists from Woodbridge, Manassas, Gainesville, Occoquan, and Neabsco were all showing in the gallery, which represents most of the districts in the county. The selected artists were juried in by a panel put together by the Arts Recreation Specialist, with each artist being asked to submit 6 large works and several smaller works for consideration. Once selected, the artists received an email of the chosen selections and were responsible for delivering their work to the space.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship included JBG Smith’s in-kind donation of the space. Prince William Art Society (PWAS) contributed assistance in window design through time and various requests for items to help fill the space. Various ideas came to mind during the initial program planning which included opening event sponsors for themed events as well as art showings and performances for Easter, Black History, Mother’s Day, Women History Month, Hispanic Heritage, Veterans Day and countless others. The space offers a great opportunity and presence for advertising and hosting events and programming with two additional rooms for activities off from the main gallery.

Audiences Served

Audience metrics were not directly gauged. However, through the interactive activity of asking guests to participate in our “People’s Choice” selection there were well over 200 submissions. That number with an additional 150 or so that did not leave any information, it is safe to say that well over 300 visitors and residents came through the doors. These numbers were very diverse culturally, economically, and demographically which open the doors of allowing a greater vision for community access to the arts, and knowledge that the arts are all-inclusive here in Prince William County. This helps us as an organization to think of tailoring events that will allow for partners in the future.

The verbal feedback from visitors ranged from excitement to see such a space in the area to shock, that PWC had so many talented artists. Other responses were interests in workshops and classes for various art forms, to seeing this kind of facility in other areas in PWC and getting involved in the Arts Council. During the event, all artwork sold were handled through the non-profit PWAS organization which provided their POS system to accommodate all purchases. PWAS was allowed to extend their stay for two additional weeks at the request of JBG Smith Management.

The long term foresight for the project would be to hold various programs throughout the week in the other available rooms in the facility that would include: Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, and more. This too would serve as a space to hold DPRT programs and meetings. Most importantly, it would give the Arts Council an opportunity to have a space for meetings and rehearsals for member organizations as needed.

-The above information was provided by Herb A. Williams, Arts Recreation Specialist.

The PWAS Summary: Revisiting November and December 2021

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) was asked to host an art show at Stonebridge in the fall of last year and the group rose to the occasion and hosted an art event for about 3 weekends beginning on the day after Thanksgiving through early December.

The artists of PWAS volunteered their time to work the shifts necessary to have the gallery staffed for the many visitors that were often astounded when they came through the doors for various reasons: that there was a gallery there AND in Prince William County, and that the quality of the artwork was outstanding! They were thoroughly impressed with the beautiful space. Friends and young couples were strolling along the sidewalks window shopping after a wonderful meal at one of the many local restaurants and saw the lights on and the signs up (and the friendly faces!) and came in to say hello - and to see what was going on! Several times, an artist was at the window painting and that certainly caught their interest!

The artist members displaying their artwork would answer questions about the space, the art, and would be asked if their artwork was on display. Well, that was a emphatic, "YES, right over here!" Not only did the artists enjoy the experience, but the visitors LOVED it. They voted on their favorite piece, they took their time and enjoyed viewing the show. Many even made purchases for their homes or for gifts.

The Next Art Show, or the REOPENING

We are THRILLED that Open Space Arts will open again on Saturday, April 2, 2022, and this time the Call for Art went out to all of the Prince William County art groups to extend out to their members as well as posted on social media for Prince William County artists. The first show is scheduled to run between Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, May 1 which will be called "Coloring the County". This show will feature artists from not only Prince William Art Society, but across from Prince William County and its various art groups.

This initial Call for Art has a deadline of Saturday, March 19, so see Call for Art link below! It is FREE to enter if you reside in Prince William County OR are a member of a Prince William County art group.

And Coming in May 2022 and Beyond!

Planned for May is the Student Art Show - who are the future of art. We are working with PWC and various contacts that work with students (under 18) that excel in the visual arts to do everything to make this art show happen in May. This is the plan, so more on this once everything is fully in place.

And ongoing, we have filled our calendar with big plans for the future of art at Stonebridge and for Prince William County - for visitors and creators for 2022 and are planning more for 2023. This is such an opportunity for the art groups and artists residing in PWC!  See our Call for Art and get involved. As stated above, we have various themes, holidays, monthly celebrations and so many ideas to develop so that each month there is something different and of interest to everyone in PWC and all the visitors to Stonebridge.

Tentative Hours: Wednesday - Saturday, 12 - 7pm and Sunday, 12 - 5pm

Post 124: Composition 1. Rule of Thirds

Composition: Rule of Thirds

Part 1 of my series on Composition

If you are shooting at a target with a bow and arrow, hitting the target dead center is the goal. If you are shooting via a camera, or painting that target, dead center is not where you want to target.

What is the "Rule of Thirds"?

Draw a tic-tac-toe grid. Hey, you're an artist, you can go back to the basics and no, we are not solving quadratic equations in algebra - maybe. (I'm not talking about putting an X² in the center) When designing your artwork, by placing a tic-tac-toe grid over the artwork, you can find your best "rule of thirds".

There are a lot of rules of composition that you may or may not follow. I tend to think most artists WANT to break as many rules as possible, but maybe that's me... Anyway, this is one of the main rules used by cinematographers, photographers and artists (artamographer?) world-over.

Divide an image into thirds using the tic-tac-toe grid which as you can see, divides the image into nine sections and four intersection points. Place your horizon at either the top horizontal line or the bottom horizontal line while positioning the subject(s) image at the intersection points. Your target is off-center which is considered much more pleasing to the eye. There is a better visual use of the negative space / subject and background.

The eye tends to view an image (of any type) from the upper left, then move down going to the bottom left. Then the eye sweeps to the upper right then drops to the bottom right, all very quickly.

What do you want the viewer of your art to notice first?

Many artists design their painting on their computers first then move the design onto their canvas. Working via computer would make easier work of moving the elements around 'on the grid' pre-painting. Do you consider this rule in your compositions?

Post 123: Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon

Art Book: Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon

I read this book while "vacationing", ok while house-sitting for a cousin in Richmond, Virginia last summer (2021). My cousin's husband is an artist as well, so I found this book on a shelf and read it while sitting pool-side. (See, it WAS a vacation!)

A Book Review of Steal Like An Artist

Author: Austin Kleon

Edition Year: 2012

Think about it: every pose, every stance, every expression and every smile has already been painted, drawn, sketched, and photographed. Every animal, bird, insect, flower, and tree has been the subject of the same. Every mountain, ocean wave, sunrise and sunset too. Ok, so as this book and the Bible point out in Ecclesiastes 1:9:

"What has been will be again,
    what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun."

Humans have been around for quite awhile and we have rehashed what has been done before us, seen by most anyone, said before by someone else, thought of by many, written about by some, or painted by another artist in the past. That is fine, we each have to live our own life and paths and takes on things.

What I like about this book is that Austin Kleon describes that this is what we, as artists, do and need to do - just put your own creative take or twist on it. Or even our own colors on it.

I especially liked Mr. Kleon's notes on daily logging "What are the best things that happened today?" Focus on the great things in life, while learning to deal - properly - with the less agreeable things. Keep up the good fight, keep doing YOUR thing, keep working and moving forward.

Now on to Kindle...

I have 2 more books to read by Austin Kleon on my Kindle:
Show Your Work!
Keep Going

It would be nice to be sitting by the pool again but a little too early for that yet. And it did snow 3 inches here today (Saturday) in Woodbridge, VA wouldn't you know.

Have you read this book and what art books would you recommend?
