Post 490: Onyx Art Group Show with 6 PWAS Members

Onyx Art Group Show with 6 PWAS Members

In an effort to create more opportunities to display and sell art, six members of the Prince William Art Society established the Onyx Art Group. Their inaugural art exhibition was on May 18, 2024. The next exhibition is entitled, “A Journey Through Art” and will be held on September 21,2024, 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. The venue will be the Westridge Swim and Dive Clubhouse at 12764 Quarterhorse Lane, Woodbridge, VA 22193. The six artists displaying their work are Evelyn Chatters, Nicole M. Fisher, Anna Gatling, Akon Otoyo, Penny Shaw, and Otis L. Stanley.

Evelyn Chatters

I just finished this acrylic pour for the Onyx Art Group show. It could be a butterfly. Yes?!  It can join Akon's  group of butterflies fluttering upwards in the wind.

Akon Otoyo

In the early stages of a butterfly medley as they flutter about.  I visualize yellow and black hues, but we'll see what I end up with!

Penny Shaw

I have just completed my mixed media series of four called Lookout Seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter taken from my memories of finding solitude at Point Lookout, Missouri overlooking Lake Taneycomo near Branson. Finding a special place to explore your muse is difficult for many artists when they have the hustle and bustle of stuff surrounding them or interupting their special zone. I found this spot for all seasons.

Anna Gatling

Swan song. An ode to the orchid, an evaluation.

Otis Stanley

Bluesman Gus Gibson 16x20 Acrylic

Nicole M. Fisher

These pieces are currently unnamed. They are part of a series on paper that I’m working on. Inspired by the colors of holiday berries.

Art takes you on a journey. Discover the journey of each artist! You are invited to attend the exhibition!

Post 489: PWAS Artistry Spin Blog Birthday and PWAS Members

PWAS Artistry Spin Blog Birthday and PWAS Members

So this Prince William Art Society (PWAS) Blog called Artistry Spin has been around a little while to help spread the word on what the oldest art group in Prince William County is up to and for information for the members and others to learn more about, well, anything ART. AND the Artistry Spin Blog is celebrating its third birthday!

Learn More About PWAS

Three years of blog posts so far! We are currently at 489 posts and counting, so the readers can certainly learn a lot about our art group here in Prince William County. We have covered our history (past), what we currently have going on (present), and what we have planned for the future.

The PWAS Artistry Spin Blog started on August 29, 2021 with our very first post:

Prince William Art Society for Artists and Art Lovers In this post is the history of PWAS with its beginnings that I garnered from Jewell Pratt Burns. Jewell is a founding member and she is a wonderful source, a fount of knowledge, and a lovely lady as well as a wonderful artist.

Artistry Spin is where you can learn more about upcoming art events that PWAS has coming, well in advance, what we are involved in and where the members show what they do. We let everyone know the details of our meetings and guest speakers, art receptions, art tips (we have a lot that are given by various PWAS members themselves) and so much more.

Expectations on how PWAS members are required to Display their art is an important post on how to prepare your artwork for galleries and shows. Lessons Learned is a huge compilation of tips of things learned after an art show, to be prepared for your next show.

Art Committees are an extremely important part of any non-profit art group as is Volunteering. Learn about Commissions, about Pricing, and Calls for Art. Interested in joining our merry band of dedicated and wise artists? Have a look at Membership. And any and all artists need to know how to handle Art Rejection. It happens to ALL of us.

The Blog is setup as most recent blog post first and important art topic pages in the top navigation. Your view will depend on if you are on your mobile device or laptop. Topics can be searched for, or found in our Blog Archives, in the Labels, Tags and Keywords list, and/or in Most Popular All Time Posts or Popular Posts this week. See also How to Use This Blog

I'm often asked if there is something in the blog about "XYZ" and I more often than not have to say, like Ragu Spaghetti Sauce, "It's IN there!"

Of course, PWAS has its own website, found at https://www.princewilliamartsociety.com/ but a blog can go so into so much more detail and doesn't necessarily have to adhere to the expected savoir-faire of the official website.

Blog Schedule and About Blog Posts

PWAS Members can find the information on past shows, upcoming shows, and show what they have going on. But how can PWAS members get involved?

Schedule - find information about the blog schedule and types of blog posts available to the PWAS membership. Learn how YOU can use the blog to help in the promotion of your art as well as everything that PWAS is and does.

Any blog thrives with good content. A good portion of our content comes directly from our members, especially when they provide their information and images. *AND why wouldn't any artist not use the free promotion available to them???

How can you get more info about yourself as a PWAS member artist? Well here are some topics that can help do that. Periodically, I, as the Blog Admin send out a request or a question asking the PWAS members to send me pictures, or to answer the question as in the following examples you will see if you go to the Schedule Page.

  • Art Topics and What's on Your Easel? - an email asking what you are working on.
  • Inside the Studio of... - a single artist member post featuring YOUR studio and YOU
  • Artist Interviews - a single artist member post featuring YOU
  • The Art with the Artist Posts - great posts of gatherings with all artists with their art
  • Get Your Art In the PWAS Art Store
  • Upcoming PWAS Events, Member Events, and NON-PWAS Events or Shows
    • What's on Your Radar? - an email asking what's coming up for you.
  • PWAS Plein Air Posse - a subgroup of PWAS members that enjoy plein air painting
  • PWAS Meeting Recaps
  • PWAS Event Recaps
  • PWAS Member Awards and Recognition and Woohoos! - did your artwork get a ribbon or recognition?
  • Vacationing or Visiting Somewhere Awesome?
  • PWAS New Member Intro - are you a new member and want to write a intro post about yourself?
  • Member Advice and Suggestions, Art Tips
  • Don't Spill the Paint - art comedy, comics, especially if YOU created it
Other ideas worth chasing are member Shoutouts, any art class notes and advice, definitely the sharing of your favorite art tips. The PWAS Board is welcome to share periodic Board Notes too.

Send the info on What's on Your Easel? and What's on your Radar? by the deadline requested so that I can build a blog post with your info.

Blog Comments

Under every single blog post (and Page post too) you'll find either a small link called 'No comments' or a number of comments. Not all PWAS members know that when Commenting on a blog post, which we encourage, that in order to filter out spammers, haters and duplicate posts, the Blog Admin must approve or disapprove a comment on a post before they are viewable. Thus, it may take a few hours or to the next day before they are approved so they will show. Be patient. You don't need to repost it. And we love a name with the comment, so click here to learn more on how to not post as Anonymous - Comments.

Anyway, it is a happy birthday for The Spin and I hope you all find the PWAS Artistry Spin Blog useful and will drop your comments in this post. Give "The Spin" a happy birthday and let me know what you think of it.

Post 488: PWAS Artist Members Reveal Their Artwork

PWAS Artist Members Reveal Their Artwork

The Prince William Art Society nonprofit artist group meets regularly on the 4th Monday of each month at the Tall Oaks Community Center at 12298 Cotton Mill Drive, Woodbridge, VA at 7:30pm. We typically have a guest speaker/artist giving a program, demonstration, or presentation on artistically what they do. We've had some awesome programs over the years, but periodically, we change things up.

PWAS Meeting Monday, August 26, 2024

Our guest programs have been really informative and often quite fun over the years since I've been a member of the PWAS art group. We've had every medium covered - oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, and mixed media. The members have been introduced to gel plate print making, plein air painting, photoart digital art, art commissions, the use of gold leaf and sparkly paint, and so many other art topics and artist's works.

An in the spring, a meeting is set aside to award a scholarship to a qualifying high school student or two. In December, we forgo our usual meeting day, time and occasionally place to have a PWAS member plus 1 Christmas party. But occasionally, our program may go in another direction altogether.

So at this past Monday's PWAS meeting, we introduced a totally new idea. Each member attending was requested to bring in a recently completed art work. Tom Payne, our PWAS Member-At-Large, videoed the Member Art Reveal. Here are some photos of the photos and behind the scenes of our Art Reveal session. I'm looking forward to seeing the videos when they are ready!

I wasn't able to capture every single PWAS artist that came and not all artists brought artwork. Nonetheless, I'm liking this change up to "the usual". How about you? We'll have to do this again!

Post 487: Art Reveal at the August PWAS Meeting Aug 26th

Art Reveal at the August PWAS Meeting Aug 26th

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) meets on the 4th Monday of the month at 7:30 and we typically have a guest speaker with an interesting art presentation. The topics can vary dramatically and this month is no different, except this month, the PWAS members themselves are the guest artists!

August 26 Program is Art Reveal

On August 26th for the monthly meeting members are encouraged to bring a work of art they have recently completed to share on the Prince William Art Society social media. We would like to provide web space for showcasing our own members' work in a dynamic way by filming each member who participates standing holding their art work facing away from the camera, then turning it around to reveal their work of art. Wear whatever you want, bring whatever size you have (as long as you can hold it!) but bring a dry work of art you would like to reveal. An example of the result can be viewed at:  https://youtube.com/shorts/xbToDKQWJVQ?si=RIkG98XHDyuFtBgn.

Photo by Yuri Kabisher on Unsplash

The Art Reveal will be for current PWAS members or new members (those who join during the night), but the fun, refreshments, networking and art news provided during the Art Reveal program and the business meeting to follow are open to all and the public is cordially invited to attend. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 12298 Cotton Mill Dr., Woodbridge Va, 22192 beginning at 7:30 pm. Business meetings begin at approximately 8:00 pm.

Notes for a few things to remember:

  • If you have NOT varnished your painting yet, wait until AFTER the art reveal. Varnishes can add a lot of reflection.
  • Do not to cover your face (if you can help it) when you turn the painting.
  • Have the painting right side up!
  • Look up at the camera. Smile!
  • Bring a note with the name of the painting, size, medium and of course, your name.
  • We hope to have a LOT of members at the meeting so we'll need to turn the paintings around in a nice smooth motion so we can finish this video project up in a timely manner.

Now for the tough part. What art piece are you bringing to the meeting?

Post 486: What do PWAS Members Have On Their Radars?

What do PWAS Members Have On Their Radars?

Spring and the fall are the busiest time of year for art shows, art festivals and any other type of art events. True, art is shown and sold throughout the year in galleries and art stores, and online as well, but the weather in the spring and fall makes it far easier to get out the tents, the gridwalls, the display tables and all the other equipment an artist needs to show off their art. The Prince William Art Society members have a lot of choice on where to show their art off in PWC.

Upcoming PWAS Art Events

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) has many upcoming art shows and art events which include the events listed below. Many of the PWAS members will gather and show their artwork for all to see in these shows that PWAS takes part in or hosts, or other art events.

Arts Alive at the Hylton Performing Arts Center 10960 George Mason Circle, Manassas, VA Saturday, September 14, 2024 12-5pm This annual art show is a highlight of the year for PWAS members and will feature an area for a walk through art gallery with all types of art, art prints, miniature art and more.

Art in the Garden Saturday, September 14, 2024 11am to 1pm at the Montclair Library 5049 Waterway Drive, Dumfries, VA The PWAS Plein Air Posse will be around the property, painting wonderful sights around the garden.

PWAS at Fall Festival at Leopold's Preserve Saturday, September 21 from 11am-3pm (rain date Sept 28) 16290 Thoroughfare Road, Broad Run, VA. The Plein Air Posse may put in an appearance as well. Info on this one will be coming out VERY soon.

PWAS at Montclair Library will also be the location of a PWAS art show in November and December 2024 featuring the art of many PWAS members. The library is at 5049 Waterway Drive, Dumfries, VA. More info about this show will be coming out soon.

PWAS at Fall Tall Oaks Community Center Art Show Saturday, October 5, 2024 12298 Cotton Mill Drive, Woodbridge, VA. Time TBD.

PWAS at Benedictine Gardens is Saturday, October 5, 2024 - waiting for more info on this one. TBD

Various art classes provided by the Prince William Art Society with a plethora of art teachers and art subjects in various PWC locations. Watch for the upcoming classes - that are FREE at this time - on https://www.princewilliamartsociety.com/register

I asked the PWAS members what was on their radar...

PWAS Member - Donna Liguria - On My Radar

I signed up for Bettie Sperty's "Gilding" art class on September 7 and I'm looking forward to that. Upcoming Art Shows that I have currently and coming up are:

Fall Art at the Mill Saturday, September 21 - Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Burwell Morgan Mill 15 Tannery Lane, Milwood, VA. Art at the Mill is a huge art show that gets thousands of entries each spring and fall and is held in a live working mill. This is one of the three paintings that I will be showing there.

https://artatthemillfall2024.artcall.org/

Charcuterie Board will be at Art at the Mill, 16x20 Acrylic on canvas

Arts Alive at the Hylton Performing Arts Center 10960 George Mason Circle, Manassas, VA Saturday, September 14, 2024 12-5pm. Another great annual art show that PWAS attends, and I'll be there with various art pieces including book case art and mini art with easels.

https://www.pwcva.gov/events/arts-alive-2024

I plan on attending the Leopold's Preserve art show with Elizabeth Stathis.

The 76th Annual Piedmont Regional Art Show at Grace Episcopal Church, The Plains, Virginia. An annual art show I was accepted in last year and hope to be this year...

https://www.piedmontartshow.org/

Saturday, October 5 - Fall Tall Oaks Community Center at 12298 Cotton Mill Drive, time TBD. Someone needs to step up and lead this one but its held in the spring and the fall, so I hope to be there again.

I'm also hoping that my entries into the Crossroads Arts Alliance "Everyone's Hometown" art show are accepted. https://crossroadsartsalliance.org/

I recently had my art at The Spot at Belmont Bay.

I also currently have one of my paintings in the PWAS Online Art Store at https://www.princewilliamartsociety.com/category/all-products and I have an Etsy Shop at https://donnaliguriaart.etsy.com

What's in Your Wallet?

Well, maybe not wallet per se, but what's on your radar (then on to your wallet, we all hope)? An artist has GOT to hustle! And I consider my schedule pretty light. How about you?

I know there are many PWAS artist members that are showing in Fredericksburg, at other art shows here in Prince William County and all over the Northern Virginia area. There are Calls for Art around the clock in our county, in our area, in our state and internationally as well as specific to various mediums and styles.  Until next time...
