Post 301: Feb 2023 - What's on Your Easel?

Feb 2023 - What's on Your Easel?

Most artists love to show off what they do, even if its in its early stages - and people like to see the 'behind the scenes' story of how a piece of art comes to be. Approximately monthly, I ask the Prince William Art Society (PWAS) members, "What's on your easel right now?" Here are some samples of their works in progress.

Artwork In Progress (AWIP) from PWAS

PWAS has members that are painters, photographers, digital artists, mixed media and more, so not every work is on an easel. So the better question is, "What are you (as an artist) working on right now?" And actually the answer to that could be what they are actually painting, photoshopping, quilling, manipulating, pouring, throwing, carving, and whatever other fine art VERB I can throw at it.

Let's see who answered the question this time for their AWIPs...

Michael Kent

Up in smoke. Any resemblance between this and anything is pure.

Susan Furr

Charcoal and Chalk

Donna Liguria

"Fly Like an Eagle" and "Black Bird", in acrylic, both are 6x6 - additions to a bird series I started last year.

Elena Jochum

8x10, commission, watercolor on paper

Saul Roldan

Our Daily Bread, oil

Sue Rosenbaum

I’m a mixed media collage artist and I’ve been working on some new backgrounds. 7-10 layers of acrylic paint, brayered onto 8.5 x 5.5 watercolor paper. One will become a birthday card for my husband. The others will become my next collage series by adding vintage papers, stamping, ink and stencils. I’ll call them “peeling back the layers”, for now.

David Dillon

5 x 7 acrylic on canvas board. Working title is Red Strap

Otis Stanley

Washboard Blues, Acrylic 16 x 20

Evelyn Chatters

The name of this painting is Survival. It is inspired by a novel entitled July's people by Nadine Gordimer. Vividly describes how the servant in South Africa has to save his masters from the uprising during the apartheid era.

Fatima Farzana

Title: Views of the Rickshaw Girl Size: 36x48 Medium: Acrylic

Kelly Haneklau

A commissioned abstract realism acrylic piece for a customer (painted after a photo they took)

Sheri Herrick

While I'm in FL, I'm experimenting with zentangling on flower photos I've taken at various Botanical gardens in my travels-thinking ahead to May flowers at OSA.  This is Lotus taken in India.

Elizabeth Stathis

“The Mastro's”. 11 X 14 Aquarelle Arches Watercolor Block,140lb Cold pressed, Kuretake Pan Paints, and Windsor & Newton Watercolor Pans, using a Princeton Watercolor rigger brush. WIP of what is to be just one part of an article that will be published in a local magazine entitled, “The Lovely Front Doors of Lake Manassas’.

Mark Murphy

I'm working on watercolor of firefighters in action.  I found a very old block of watercolor paper with no markings (cover was missing).  It looks like Arches but it seems to be even less absorbent than hot pressed, perhaps due to its age.  It is almost like working on plastic "paper" (Yupo).  It has been quite the challenge.

Zorri Berrios

Another rendition of La Gioconda.

Thank you to all the Prince William Art Society members that add to our blog! Great to see what you guys have coming up on the radar!

Post 299: Great Find - Etsy Videos

Great Find - Etsy Videos

Do you have an Etsy shop? If yes, you KNOW it takes work, work and more work. If you have one, drop your Etsy link in the comments! If you don't have one, have you been thinking about it?

Donna Liguria Art Etsy Home Page 2023 - @DonnaLiguriaArt

Etsy Videos, Tips and Advice

Before you get started on Etsy, do a lot of research. Repeat, a LOT of research. And if you already have an Etsy shop, continue to do some research on optimizing your Etsy site. You cannot build it and leave it, this is not Field of Dreams and "if you build it, they will come". Etsy takes work. And Etsy means having a shipping station (unless you have art products that are fulfilled by a Production Partner [site]). Etsy becomes a part of your weekly, if not daily schedule to a degree.

When I have "Great Find Videos", I will try to give you a list of the highlighted points in the video as well to help you. Because this Great Find is such a large topic, I found several videos with some great tips and advice you will find useful. Because Artistry Spin is the Prince William Art Society's art blog, I keep in mind that we are creating art on various surfaces and art prints - but there are key things that are important no matter what your Etsy shop sells.

  1. Good Title - this is NOT the title of your artwork - they are keywords to FIND your Etsy listing. This is important, it is also not the size, probably not the medium nor your name (or product subject's name) unless you are well-known.
  2. Good Images - GREAT product pictures are KEY as well as video(s) about you, how you do your art, and/or how you did that art piece.
    1. Natural Lighting
    2. Background - trendy, clean, natural
    3. Clear Images
    4. Edit Images
  3. Good Description - using those SEO keywords and phrases
  4. Good Tags - using SEO keywords and phrases (limited characters)
  5. Shipping Station - decide if you will ship international or national. Decide how large your artwork will be that you will ship. PRICE your artwork so that you cover ALL of those costs. Get the equipment and supplies you need to take care of shipping - and that is ALL part of the costs, including the labels.
    1. Shipping Carrier
    2. Shipping Profiles
    3. Packing Materials - source, in stock?
    4. Free Shipping if possible
    5. Weight scale?

Post 297: Great Find - Improve Your Paintings Video

Great Find - Improve Your Paintings Video

A new series of Artistry Spin Blog Posts are "Great Find Art Videos". PWAS members are welcome to suggest videos but do send me why you found it so interesting or valuable.

I am a self-taught artist. A lot of the people in our art group, the Prince William Art Society (PWAS), went to art school, have taken a lot of art classes, and have a lot more art experience than others. I wonder if this type of art tip was taught in their art classes?

- Painting with the right amount of "blockiness".

True, all of us can learn how to do almost anything from watching and finding the how-to videos anywhere on the internet, but we can also get lost, or go down a rabbit hole at times too. Then we find ourselves, hours later, thinking, "where did our day go?" We've spent way too much time researching and/or watching way too many videos (maybe cat videos?) and we realized we wasted a big block of time.

Great Find Art Videos is, I am hoping, a way for our art group to share invaluable art tips, whether in art sales, art pricing, art creating. Let me know if you learn something new with these "great find" videos!

Do you have a Great Find Art Video to share? Send me the title and link and tell me why you want to Share it.
