Post 382: Art Tips 9

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...9

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This is an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

  1. Join an online art community! 7 Popular Online Art Communities to Join in 2023 Why? Many benefits like building a pro network, inspiration, feedback, growth, learning, challenges, courage, confidence, friendships, support, collaboration, and new things!
  2. When asking for art advice, study and research who is doing and is successful in what you are asking about. For example, if you like how someone does a style you like, or if you love they way they package their art prints or if you see someone successfully and consistently getting into art shows or doing something you would like to learn - there is your resource. Also consider, does this person see you as a comrade or as competition? - to ensure they will answer your query in full.
  3. Get your face out there if you are a beginner artist. Attend exhibits, receptions, galleries, shows, and other artsy things and introduce yourself. Show an interest in artwork you admire and cultivate the relationships you build. If you start getting in on the local art scene, people start recognizing you and thinking of you as part of the scene too.
  4. Make those business cards. I've seen art admirers ask for a card from an artist they admire and want to contact - and the artist does not have one.
  5. Want to be a professional artist? Present yourself professionally. This one can cover a LOT of territory, from correspondence to appearance.
  6. Self-taught artists are NO less gifted than educated artists, by golly. Some may debate this one. There are many of the great masters that were self-taught (more or less). And truly, what is self-taught these days? An artist may have had a semester of art in high school, taken a class or two, or at a minimum, watched some YouTube videos. Van Gogh didn't have that.
  7. Overcome perfectionism.
  8. Learn the art fundamentals - Color (Light), Composition, Value, Form (Structure), Anatomy, Brushwork and Perspective.
  9. Learn the elements of art (building blocks) - Line, Shape, Form, Space, Texture, Value, and Color.
  10. Learn the principles of art - proportion, movement, contrast, variety, pattern, balance, emphasis
  11. How to Write an Artist's CV When You Don't Have Much (or Any!) Professional Experience
  12. Should You Include Artwork Prices on Your Website?

Often I hope that you, dear reader, will run into a tip that is new to you and needed at just the right time.

Post 379: Art Tips 8 - Social Media

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...8

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This is an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

Social Media and Online Tips

  1. Research and use tags and hashtags whenever and wherever you post online. Do you post on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, X? Use the best keywords so that your post and art can be found. Use the best hashtags according to what you do. Examples: #DonnaLiguriaArt #PrinceWilliamArtSociety #PWAS #acrylicpainting #beachphotography #visualart #artlife #supportthearts
  2. Use the emoticons πŸ–ΌπŸ–ŒπŸŽ¨πŸ“· when posting on your social sites. Beach artwork? Use those emoticons.
  3. Share what you do - visually. Create a video about the process you use to create your art (OR photography, OR digital art)
  4. Be a role model for other artists. If they find you and love your art, they'll look up to you and you can teach them various aspects of what you do. Record workshops, classes, and do live spots.
  5. Engage with your followers, comments the post, feedback they give - and find various ways to do that.
  6. What's the story behind the scenes? Can you engage your audience with the hidden meaning of your artwork, the inspiration and/or the reason you do what you do?
  7. Collaborate with other artists. Perhaps create a joint live session. Help each other out with the comments, reposting, sharing, etc.
  8. Content is KING! New, fresh, consistent posting is how to keep your followers engaged and coming back for more. See https://www.allshemakes.org/blog/50-social-media-content-ideas-for-artists
  9. Cliffhangers...build suspense. Slowly reveal what you are working on. Find enticing ways to do that.
  10. Don't be that used car salesman. Do use a call for action.
  11. Remind your followers of past work. Not everyone sees everything so periodically resurrect older artwork.
  12. Track your Stats. See what is working, what is engaging and what is not.

Post 376: Art Tips 7

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...7

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This is an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!
Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

  1. Experimenting in art is sort of like practicing art - you'll learn more and get better the more you do.
  2. Chemicals and art supply safety - many of the art supplies we use can be harmful whether odorless or not. Put a lid on whatever needs a lid, use air circulation and wear gloves and/or a mask/
  3. Never stop learning new techniques - see #1.
  4. While volunteering or while helping to 'man" the art booth, TALK to other artists about their art, their techniques, tools and inspiration. You'll learn more and you may make a life long art friend.
  5. Respect your equipment! Clean up when done, store things properly, and for goodness sake, transport your artwork carefully.
  6. Art files for inspiration. Use your computer and your phone or in your file cabinet, save ideas, photos, snippets for the day when you run into artist block.
  7. Get your art "out there". Enter art shows, competitions. Hang your artwork in restaurants, gift stores, cafes, coffee shops, libraries, bars, hotels, county office buildings, friend's office spaces - just ASK. Find the places that love promoting local art, local artists, local places. (Get an agreement and conditions in writing and TRY!)
  8. Social media is another part of #7. Get your art name out there too. Who better to promote YOU than YOU? Just because you are a part of an art group, you cannot expect that to be your only avenue to promote that your art is on display too.
  9. This is a harsh one but get used to rejection. I emphasize this one again because it is going to happen and it will happen more than once so it is to be expected. You may not get into an art gallery or show you entered. Not all of your art was accepted. You may not make a sale. Stuff happens but keep on trying.
  10. Go to your art reception(s) and art shows to better promote YOU. People love getting to know the artist(s) on display and if you aren't there, how can they? How can you say, this is my art? Or answer their questions? Or hand them your business card if they want to learn more?
  11. If you have the talent for art, do not waste it. You've been blessed with a wonderful gift so use it some how, some way, some where.
  12. Grow. If you only do art occasionally, if you don't learn more, take classes, rub elbows with creative people, get to know your local art scene, if you do nothing, how will you and your art business grow? Get to museums and art galleries, look at art books and magazines, take inspirational pictures and examine how you can recreate those colors.

Post 373: Art Tips 6 - Art Career

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...6

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This will hopefully be an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!

Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions - "Art Career"

  1. If you get the vibe from someone looking at your art (or hear them say its too expensive) you need to offer them other alternative options - do you have art prints? Do you have smaller, less expensive works available? You may say something like, "This piece seems to maybe not fit into your budget, this other option may work better for you...."
  2.  If you haven't already figured it out, if you have artwork in a gallery, it benefits YOU to be at the gallery as much as you can while your works are there. People want to meet the artist that created the work. People respond and feel more inclined to purchase your artwork IF they feel like they know you.
  3. Along with #2, you might be a shy person - you have to learn to promote YOU and YOUR art! Tell a story, be genuine. What motivates you, what are you inspired by? What are you passionate about? Write it down and be ready to tell your story.
  4.  Curate your art submissions when entering art competitions, calls for art, and trying to get in a gallery. That means to purposely ensure there is a visual cohesion, a union of similarity in some way. Think about that one - if your artwork is very random, it's easier for a juror to throw out what they don't feel "fits". Yet if the artwork is ALL done very well, and just sort of fits together, it may make it easier for pieces to get in as its harder to pick "just one". The confidence and professionalism of the artist shines through.
  5. When you hear, "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket", you know what that means, correct? The same with your art. Don't be in just one place, be everywhere you can manage and handle.
  6. Be organized and work on this side of your art business because it is just as important as the creation side. Being organized will help in so many ways!
  7.  Be patient. Be realistic. I have seen artists that come into the gallery for an art show and if they don't sell anything that one time, they don't show their art again at that gallery.
  8.  Realize that over-night-success can take YEARS.
  9.  How to Create a Professional Artist Website by Julien Delagrange
  10.  Here is a GREAT Tip: Follow the instructions you are given for a Call for Art.
  11.  A career in art is HARD WORK. If you can't do the hard work and you have a Plan B, you will probably do your Plan B.
  12. I just found this tweet by Jerry Saltz and liked it, "Three career tips for artists: 1. About 80% of making good art is regularly showing up in your studio. 2. About 80% of having a career is regularly showing up at art things out there. 3. About 80% of what you know & share comes from regularly staying up late with other artists.

Post 369: Art Tips 4

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...4

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This will hopefully be an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!
Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

  1. Join an art group in your area! Many will welcome you to visit "to check them out", so find one you like and what they have to offer. Benefits
  2. Get seriously involved in your local art group! Sometimes if you need something to change, if you think things can be improved and you have the skill sets - put your knowledge and enthusiasm to work! PWAS Art Group As a former PWAS President told me once, the best way to make a change is to get involved where YOU can help implement that change.
  3. Save ALL of your artwork. Your growth and improvements are compared within your own works - not in comparison with another person's work.
  4. Here's one I haven't tried YET - in a plastic container or jar with a lid, push folded up damp paper towels and add acrylic paint onto the towels for this make-do storage palette.
  5. Make your own labels or use a label maker to LABEL all of your art supplies in your art space to help organize what is where. It should help to stay organized as long as you (or anyone using your space) put things back in the right place. Put like things together as well.
  6. Wire rack shelving can be used in great ways to dry your artwork whether placed ON the shelf or hanging UNDER the shelf and using binder clips or clothes pins. Sometimes organization space is easier to go up than around the room or taking up your flat surface work spaces.
  7. Finished a painting and loved how things turned out and wondered how you could re-create it later? I used this on a sea turtle I drew and painted one time. Once the original is completely dry, use a piece of transparency paper and copy your own work. Copy it and create your own stencil shape on hard paper or cardboard and go from there.
  8. Hit the clearance racks of your favorite art or paint stores for your lucky finds, embellishments or inspirational ideas.
  9. On that note, Michaels has a 70% off canvas sale about 3 times a year so be on the lookout and stock up ASAP when those sales are announced. Your favorite sizes will disappear quick.
  10. If you are thinking of an Etsy shop for your artwork, consider the sizes of what all you want to offer and their shipping container sizes and stay within those perimeters of canvas sizes.
  11. Makeup brushes are great as blending brushes.
  12. Hair conditioner on your brushes? Makes sense doesn't it especially if they are made of natural hair. Periodically use hair conditioner on your brushes to keep them from separating.

What art tips, art advice or suggestions do you have to add? Money saving tips, new art tools, art "hacks" - using every day objects in usual ways - what ideas have you used?

Post 367: Art Tips 3

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...3

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This will hopefully be an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!

Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

On with our batch of 12 art tips...

  1. Need speckles, splatters, splotches or spots? Use an old toothbrush and flick paint onto the canvas
  2. Paint leftover on the palette? Start the background or a base layer of another painting with it.
  3. Get outside for inspiration! Take pictures of interesting things and play with the images on your computer to zoom in and find the interesting angles or highlight a section of the photo to get onto your canvas.
  4. Take your photos BEFORE using the isolation coat or varnishing to avoid the light reflections that are harder to deal with. Gloss and semi gloss finishes will affect the later photos.
  5. Protect your artwork! I have seen artists pile up their canvases one on top of another and seen very pricey works with their edges beat all to heck. Wrap your work in towels, pillowcases, felt "sleeves" - find what works for you and your budget. Still other artists have more professional wrapping and boxing transportation setups.
  6. Tired of ruining your good clothes when you paint? Go to the thrift store and buy big shirts or something cheap for your "Paint Clothes". I have a couple of very large men's shirts to wear, just roll up the sleeves.
  7. Baby wipes are great to use for hands for easy, quick cleanup.
  8. Follow great art blogs like this PWAS Artistry Spin blog or the others listed in our side navigation where you can find TONS of info, see the section "Blogs to Follow: Most Recent Update" in the lower right navigation.
  9. You can use hair spray to "fix" your charcoal or acrylic drawings - perhaps NOT on your fine art pieces, as they could yellow over time but on test or journal pieces - if you are out of a good quality fixative.
  10. Cornstarch can be used to thicken runny acrylic paint or to add texture to watercolor paintings.
  11. Use your freezer to store your oil paint palette after covering it with parchment paper, wax paper, or plastic wrap to prevent any drying.
  12. Collect small jars (with lids) and wash well to use for pouring Liquin, linseed oil, mixing paint, etc.

Post 363: Art Tips 2

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...2

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This will hopefully be an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!
Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

  1. Look around the house for items that can add texture. Create stencils out of: bubble wrap, doilies, lace, clean sponges, and more.
  2. Change your point of view for your inspirational photos - look up, look down, get low.
  3. Acrylic paint drying too fast for you? Try spraying the back of your canvas with water to help hold the moisture longer. There are mediums you can use as well that will slow down the drying time.
  4. Use a covered palette with acrylics - and spray water in it for added moisture. The ones with the damp sponges work well too (stay-wet palettes) - just clean and change periodically to avoid issues.
  5. Keep your coffee cup AWAY from your paint water cup.
  6. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (from PWAS member Michelle Baker #6-12)
  7. A thrifted baby diaper bag with lots of pockets makes a great art carrier.
  8. Plastic containers can get a new life after being thoroughly washed as brush stations or palettes.Try incorporating found items in your work either for patterns or textures-orange red mesh bags can be used in so many ways.
  9. Dollar Tree plastic placemats or thrifted plastic mats are great for taping watercolor paper to if you like to work on more than one painting at a time.
  10. Goodwill is a great place to pick up art supplies to try new ideas or mediums.
  11. Egg cartons are fantastic for many art projects.
  12. Facebook pages like "Buy Nothing Gainesville, VA" or "Buy Nothing Woodbridge, VA" are great places to score materials.

What art tips, art advice or suggestions do you have to add? Money saving tips, new art tools, art "hacks" - using every day objects in usual ways - what ideas have you used?

Post 361: Art Tips 1

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...1

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This will hopefully be an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!

Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

  1. Rules are made to be broken, then sketch the broken box they were carried in on.
  2. As Bob Ross put it, there are no "art accidents", you can make "happy little trees" or whatever is logical to your art. I've made lady bugs or birds out of paint splatters.
  3. A sketch a day, makes a better apple. A better doodle, a better face. Skill sets are ALWAYS improved with practice. If you played guitar you would need to practice, right? Become a better artist by DOING.
  4. Take a lot of time "seeing" your art. Take a picture of it, view it from different angles.  Turn it up-side-down, sideways. Check the balance, feel and intensity of whatever is on the canvas. Stand back from the work as you would if it was hanging in someone's living room. You will "see" the overall effect better and see where improvements are needed.
  5. You are your own worst critic. A family member is often just a cheerleader.
  6. Don't compare your work to another person's artwork. Everyone is different.
  7. Watch, learn, inspire and admire, how could you make it your own, make it better, do it differently? What twist can you put on something so that you are not copying someone else?
  8. Don't mess up your art admirer viewer's Chi by pointing out where you think your mistakes are.
  9. Begin by staining your canvas in a dull tone to do away with the glaring white of the canvas to better determine your color values.
  10. Use an inexpensive 12x12 picture glass-front frame as your pallet. Put a neutral gray paper under the glass as the background. To clean the dry acrylic paint off of it, spray with water, let sit, then wipe or scrap it off.
  11. Dried paint on a brush? Misshaped brushes? Don't toss - try Murphy's Oil Soap and water! Let soak for a couple of hours then try working that paint out, rinse, then let dry flat - or better yet with the brush side slightly lower than the handle. You can also use fabric softener to help clean brushes, rinse well.
  12. Use an old cookie sheet with the edges to dry your brushes. Put paper towels in the center and lean the brush handles on the edges so that the brush tips are in the center of the cookie sheet. This will help to drain the water from the ferrule (the metal part).

Post 299: Great Find - Etsy Videos

Great Find - Etsy Videos

Do you have an Etsy shop? If yes, you KNOW it takes work, work and more work. If you have one, drop your Etsy link in the comments! If you don't have one, have you been thinking about it?

Etsy Videos, Tips and Advice

Before you get started on Etsy, do a lot of research. Repeat, a LOT of research. And if you already have an Etsy shop, continue to do some research on optimizing your Etsy site. You cannot build it and leave it, this is not Field of Dreams and "if you build it, they will come". Etsy takes work. And Etsy means having a shipping station (unless you have art products that are fulfilled by a Production Partner [site]). Etsy becomes a part of your weekly, if not daily schedule to a degree.

When I have "Great Find Videos", I will try to give you a list of the highlighted points in the video as well to help you. Because this Great Find is such a large topic, I found several videos with some great tips and advice you will find useful. Because Artistry Spin is the Prince William Art Society's art blog, I keep in mind that we are creating art on various surfaces and art prints - but there are key things that are important no matter what your Etsy shop sells.

  1. Good Title - this is NOT the title of your artwork - they are keywords to FIND your Etsy listing. This is important, it is also not the size, probably not the medium nor your name (or product subject's name) unless you are well-known.
  2. Good Images - GREAT product pictures are KEY as well as video(s) about you, how you do your art, and/or how you did that art piece.
    1. Natural Lighting
    2. Background - trendy, clean, natural
    3. Clear Images
    4. Edit Images
  3. Good Description - using those SEO keywords and phrases
  4. Good Tags - using SEO keywords and phrases (limited characters)
  5. Shipping Station - decide if you will ship international or national. Decide how large your artwork will be that you will ship. PRICE your artwork so that you cover ALL of those costs. Get the equipment and supplies you need to take care of shipping - and that is ALL part of the costs, including the labels.
    1. Shipping Carrier
    2. Shipping Profiles
    3. Packing Materials - source, in stock?
    4. Free Shipping if possible
    5. Weight scale?
