Post 263: Winners, We Got the Winners!

Winners, We Got the Winners!

At many of the art shows at Open Space Arts at the Stonebridge Shopping Center in Woodbridge, we have the guests vote for their favorite art piece (People's Choice) when they visit the latest art show. This month's show called "A Harvest of Artists" will come to a close on Sunday, November 20, 2022. The show opened on Nov 2 which is a little shorter show than usual but with the big holidays coming, well the new show will begin on Nov 23.

Harvest of Artist People's Choice Winners

The voting was well dispersed across all the current selections (good to know everyone got votes!) but there were three that stood out to the visitors. So I need to tell you who was selected...A drum roll please...

Third Place: is actually a painting that has already sold. No wonder we couldn't find it when we wanted to pin the ribbon! We hung the white ribbon next to one of Fatima (Sumi) Farzana's other pieces, but the third place winning painting goes to Sumi's "Autumn Flame".

Thank fully, when the Open Space Arts (OSA) committee first hung the show, I took pictures - so here is "Autumn Flame".

Sumi's "Autumn Flame" is on the left and is the Third Place Winner.

Another piece of Sumi's that is honorarily wearing her ribbon.

Second Place: Ann McCarty takes second place with the red ribbon for "Gulf Sunset".

First Place: Getting that blue ribbon, the top prize, the big blue, the whole enchilada (if we were handing out those tasty treats) goes to Anna Gatling and her painting called "Raspberry Crush".

Congratulations to the winners!

What's the Next Show?

Prince William County Artists that are juried into the next show, which is called "Deck Your Halls" will bring in art starting at 5pm - 6pm Sunday, Nov 20 or on Mon, Nov 21 between 12- 2pm. The show begins Wednesday, Nov 23 and runs until Jan 1. Remember to LABEL the back of your artwork with your Name, Title of Art, Medium and Price. Also, print out the inventory sheet and bring it with you as well as checking your wiring BEFORE you arrive! See https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/p/display.html

Reminder: The Gallery WILL be closed on Thanksgiving, Nov 24!

Everyone:  Come by the gallery soon and see the Prince William County artists latest creations! Support your local artists - we will have a variety of art from large to small at various price points so you are sure to find something you love - for your own home or as a special original gift to a friend. We will also have a Christmas Tree and our Prince William Art Society artists will decorate the tree with homemade ornaments for sale too.

I don't know about you, but I cannot wait to see the ornaments - almost as much as the show! See you soon!

Post 260: Open Space Arts - Michelle Frantz and Tony Muller Workshops

Open Space Arts - Michele Frantz and Tony Muller Workshops

Saturday, November 12, 2022 Art classes at Open Space Arts at 15000 #140 Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge, VA. Keep an eye out on Prince William Art Society's website at http://princewilliamartsociety.com, this blog, or come by the gallery.

Michele Frantz's Class on Waterscapes in Pastels Workshop

Michele Frantz led a workshop on pastels for a group of adults from 12-4pm today. There is a classroom/workroom at the back of the gallery which Open Space Arts uses for many purposes - such as workshops! Here are a few pictures from the pastel class.

Quote from Brenda: Michelle provided a very comprehensive workshop where we learned about different possible approaches to pastels. We explored the different brands of pastels for quality and effect.

Michele also provided a unique piece of sanded paper especially designed for pastel use which was new to me. I took home a pastel painting finished during the workshop. It was fun pulling out my old pastels, taking a refresher and meeting new artists.

Tony Muller's Class on Augmented Reality in the Art World

In the meantime, in the front of the gallery, Tony Muller led a discussion on Augmented Reality in the Art World. I'll create another post about his class coming up this week. From Tony:

"We first discussed the history of AR, what it is, and what it's not. Then a quick overview of how it's being used on every day life.

Then we explored the historical use of AR in various art forms - dance, theatre, and finally static gallery pieces.

The last bit of the workshop provided 3 examples of AR-enhanced artworks using the app Artivive."

Look for the upcoming presentation notes from Tony this week.

Post 257: The Cost of Art Supplies

The Cost of Art Supplies

As prices go up and up, how are you changing what you do, artistically? A question put to the PWAS membership recently and a few that responded are below.

How has the cost of art supplies affected what you do as an artist?

There could be various approaches to this question and the most obvious is to perhaps raise prices to reflect price increases in materials to create a painting. Others may change a certain brand which in a way is something to consider as the artist gets to explore new ways, methods, mediums or alternatives when they create what they do. How has the increasing prices of art supplies affected you, or has it?

1. Donna Liguria

I really like using Kamar Varnish by Krylon for my paintings. Not long ago, by a few months as of the writing of this post, I could find the can at Walmart for a little over $5 a can. It could be found at Hobby Lobby or Michael's for a few dollars more, or I had also purchased it on Amazon in a 6-pack too quite reasonably. I saw it at Walmart a few weeks back and it had gone up to over $8 a can. As of today, October 26, 2022, on Amazon it is $25.74 (last week) for an 11oz can! (GULP!) And oddly enough, I just looked today (Nov 5, 2022) and it was $19.99... I'm just not paying that although I really like the product.

I currently have other supplies that I can use for now, along with a few cans left from the 6pack of varnish I had purchased. If prices stay up, I may have to change and the finish would be a different look than I would have liked, but I'll see how it goes. As I am sure many artists will say, we are ever more looking out for supplies on sale. I'll also keep an eagle eye out for those marvelous Michael's 70% off canvas sales and I'm really hoping for a VISA Gift Card for Christmas!

2. Ann McCarty

I have curtailed as much spending as possible. Tubes of paint are not replaced until completely empty and I will shop around for the best price. Pretty much, I am working with what I have.

Sales at shows have diminished, making it hard to justify the spending.

3. Otis Stanley

The cost of art supplies has not affected my output or what I do as a painter. I look out for art supply sales and purchase in stock.

4. Linda Nedilsky

Holy cow, yes!  Most things have gone up 25%. The dilemma is that everyone is hurting, so should an artist increase his prices, possibly decreasing sales, or increase by 25%.

For now, I am just keeping my prices the same. We will see how that pans out.

5. Elena Cheney Jochum

The Cost of art supplies affected me early on, especially when I was in high school. I had to work since I was 15 just so I could afford supplies. It was one of the reasons I did not study Fine Art for my undergraduate degree. My family couldn't afford to help me with supplies back in 2008, especially larger canvases or oil paints. I was able to go to MICA in 2015 to receive a Post BACC in Fine Art, but I was able to afford my supplies by then. I ended up pursuing a career in graphic design and that helped pay for the tools I needed to use more traditional media. Basically I ended up pursuing a completely different major in psychology and then a career in graphic design instead of fine art, just because the cost of supplies and art education was too high for me.

Rising costs on your art supplies, how are YOU handling those costs?
