Post 467: Prince William Art Society Member's Favorite Works

Prince William Art Society Member's Favorite Works

The Prince William Art Society members share some of their favorite art pieces that they have ever created, painted, or photographed.

PWAS Members and Their Most Favorite Works

Around once a month or so I pose a question or request to the PWAS members to show either what they are working on, or their thoughts on an art subject, or requests for art tips - stuff like that. For this blog post, the question is "What is your most favorite art piece you have ever done (1-2 pics) and what inspired it?"

I am thinking that might be a hard question to answer, how about you? Let's see what the members have for us...

PWAS Member Donna Liguria

So far, my favorite art pieces that I have completed...I understand it's sometimes hard for each of us to select a favorite as we pour ourselves into probably any piece we have ever done. As of today, I would have to say these two acrylic paintings are my most favored:

"Sunrise at Historic Manassas Train Station" 2022 by Donna Liguria - I wanted to enter the 15th annual 2022 P-ART-ners Paint! Manassas art competition and there were certain requirements about painting something in Old Town Manassas. I caught a reference photograph early one morning of the light coming across the tracks of the station, and this is the resulting painting. It won first place in the competition that year! https://donnascavepainting.blogspot.com/2022/11/
"No One Can Teach Riding So Well As A Horse" 2021 by Donna Liguria - I was one of those little girls that LOVED horses. Horse Crazy, you know. Anything and everything horses. Before the discovery of boys. Life and time happen and when I picked up the brushes after MANY years, one thing I had to paint again was the resulting horse.

PWAS Member Mark Clifton

1)  "Fjord" 18x24 oil on canvas - 2023. This one was inspired by a neighbor's trip to Norway and resulting photos of the beautiful scenery. It was so pretty I thought I'd give it a try, and this picture is the result. Several reference photos contributed. Doesn't appear as "vast" as it should but the exaggerated sky and clouds are pretty to look at. It now hangs over my daughter's fireplace.

2)  "Blue Ridge Farm" 24x30 oil on canvas - 2022. This picture happened as an answer to a request from a relative for a large mountain scene for display as a living room centerpiece. The scene was improvised from scratch with influences from various farm sources. Having grown up in the Blue Ridge mountains, I tried to capture that rural aura. It now hangs over a living room couch.

PWAS Member Scott Elliott

[Here's] my mixed media art piece titled, "Spring Fling".  I started it back in Feb. in hopes of it being in the May/Spring Flower Art Exhibit at Open Space Arts, in which it was accepted but did not sell. I 'branched' out and decided to use floral pieces and butterflies to enhance the piece. After I started painting the hummingbirds, I decided to bring in the butterflies and dragonflies to help complete the "Spring Fling" design.

Thank you to Mark C and Scott E for participating!

Post 466: Scholarships Presented to PWC High School Students 2024

PWAS Scholarships Presented to Two PWC High School Students 2024

Monday, May 27, 2024. Once every year in spring, the Prince William Art Society (PWAS) meets to celebrate the Jewell Pratt Burns Scholarship winners that went through a lengthy selection process and are presented as our special guests along with their friends, family and teachers at our monthly meeting.

PWAS Meeting with their Very Special Guests

On Monday night two talented young artists, Allyson Burke and Zeenat Ameri received certificates of achievement and award checks of $1,000 each to apply toward their pursuit of a degree in Fine Art. Elizabeth Stathis, Prince William Art Society President, presented the awards on behalf of Jewell Pratt Burns who was unable to attend.

Allyson, who has graduated from Colgan High School's program in Fine Arts, will attend JMU in their Art Department, with a major in Fine Art and minor in Art History as well as working toward a teaching certificate. Zeenat, who has graduated from Battlefield High School with a senior year emphasis in the digital arts, will attend Northern Virginia Community College for two years in a program which will lead to completing her final two years of a Fine Art degree at VCU. She hopes to pursue a career in digital art, with a possibility of a career in commercial art.

PWAS Scholarship Committee members Emily Hawes and Madeline Winslow were joined this year by Evelyn Chatters, Sylvester Harriett, and Ana Quispe who brought experience and a variety of skills to the panel. It is an honor to be able to meet these young artists, help them along the next step in their path, and know their creativity will enrich other lives for years to come. We wish Allyson and Zeenat success in their future art endeavors!

PWAS members and special guests enjoyed the celebration with refreshments and their "scholarship cake" and enjoyed the young, up-and-coming artists and their artwork for the first part of the meeting, then later had their regular meeting, catching up on new business and upcoming shows and events. Here are some pictures of this special evening.
