Penny Shaw and Bettie Sperty - who is wearing her "Bib and Tucker".

The art reception notification asked for the artists to wear their "Bib and Tucker" - which many of the artists had to Google. Of course, the characters that we are, a couple of us actually made "bibs". Evelyn modeled one of the bibs. Photo taken by Donna Liguria. PWAS bib, created by Donna Liguria

Post 399: Sat Sep 9, 2023 at Chilifest at Stonebridge Pt 1

Sat Sep 9, 2023 PWAS at Chili Cook-Off Fall Festival at Stonebridge

Saturday, September 9, 2023 Stonebridge Shopping Center. The Prince William Art Society popup art show outside of Open Space Arts Gallery at 15000 #140 Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge, VA featured PWAS artists. A fun day it was!

Fun, Art and Iffy Weather

Popup art shows are always fun with the fellow PWAS members; getting caught up on everyone's lives and what is new. Everyone pitches in and helps with the setup, and has lots of laughs and lots of admiration for each other's art.

For a day that was supposed to be cloudy all day with a chance of thunderstorms in the evening, it started off a lot nicer than forecasted. It was bright and sunny AND HOT for a good part of the day, until around 2ish...that loud thunder roll had everyone looking up, then down. Everyone's weather apps on their phones were quickly consulted.

One of the Festivals helpers came around and said watch your weather apps...some vendors folded up tent and departed. PWAS devised a "what if scenario" and put up the tent sides. Meanwhile, the sidewalk tent was decommissioned and some art was put inside the gallery.

The art show was able to go on for awhile longer, until alas, the rain came down. And hard. In buckets. Some artists already had their art inside, while others had to wait for a break in the downpour - which took awhile to happen.

Here's some pics taken by Otis Stanley of some of the PWAS members, in the early part of the day.

Nonetheless, we had a fun day, although a long and very hot one.

I was reminded of a story I heard a couple years ago. A founding member of PWAS, Jewell Pratt Burns was telling me the story of an art show that she attended once, many years ago with her fellow PWAS members at that time. She said that they were all doing this show that they had traveled to and it started raining HARD. Well, I don't think you will ever see an artist move as fast as trying to get their artwork out of a rainstorm! Jewell was saying that the mad scramble of artists stuffing their artwork in trash bags for protection was a sight to see.

I should make that an Art Tip. When rain threatens, bring trash bags.

Post 398: Art Tips 13

Art Tips, Tricks, and More...13

You never know when you might hear an art tip about something that is just the suggestion that will solve an issue for you or help you and your work in some way. This is an ongoing series of tips and I would LOVE to have your suggestions as well!
Photo by sydney Rae on Unsplash

Art Tips, Advice, Suggestions

  1. Be patient. I recently read that overnight success for an artist can take an average of 12 years. It's definitely a journey.
  2. Focus on your artistic weaknesses.
  3. If boredom sets in, do something different.
  4. Find your style.
  5. Get the background in. Backgrounds play a supporting role of the piece.
  6. Don't let your brushes get dusty.
  7. Expose yourself. No, keep your clothes on and get out of the studio. There is not a better way for an artist to sell art than becoming a KNOWN artist - in your own community. Let people get to know you and build relationships within your local art group, attending local art receptions, and more.
  8. Learn from a rejection.
  9. Offer a range of sizes and price points.
  10. Dress for success. Make a good impression on those you are showing your art to and always be courteous and friendly.
  11. In your art career, try to not take things too personally, that is not a key to success. In every county, there are hundreds of artists trying to get into local galleries that show local artists. They can't show them all and it might not be their focus for a show.
  12. Keep your studio organized, you'll save time and money! Knowing where everything is helps you see what (paint) colors need to be replaced. Group by manufacturer, by colors and have your most used items in easy reach.
