Post 321: PWAS Meeting with Guest Artist Marni Maree March 27, 2023

PWAS Meeting with Guest Artist Marni Maree March 27, 2023

Another PWAS meeting has gone by, did you miss it? If you weren't there, you missed another good one! Marni Maree gave a wonderful and humorous program called "Art on the Run" which foretold just how fast you might be running depending on what is in the bag!

Art on the Run

Marni walked the membership through the often challenging aspects when plein air painting, especially on vacation or destination painting, and what to pack, and how to pack well especially when traveling to far away locations.

You know how it is...what do I need? What do I carry things in? How much of this or that do I need? I need so many things in case I want to use certain colors, supplies, and more.

The artist might need:

Something to sit upon
Something to draw upon and in - sketchbook
Paints - in Marnie's case, watercolors
Water Bottle, Sprayer
Palette
Pens, markers
Misc items like paper binders, clips, magnets
Something to carry it all in

It began with packing everything Marni could possibly need in a wonderfully large bag complete with sections and a beach chair.

The next trip, the bag, the seat, the number of items were downsized. The number of palettes and their size were all reconsidered...yet, this was still rather cumbersome.

Next trip, another bag. A completely foldable chair, although the potential for being uncomfortable, lightweight is a must. Or is it?

There was still room for improvement and less neck and back pain to be considered.

An inflatable cushion! On occasion, a chair can be made more comfortable or a nearby rock can be made info a more comfy place to do a quick sketch.

Fewer and smaller, more compact, lighter weight options and only the most necessary of tools and supplies. Many options were found on Amazon and helped to build the supplies for the next trip...
The current favorite supply bag and supplies

But wait, one more idea when traveling and room for everything, in miniature of course, including passport!

Marni creates her own sketch books with various paper types, sizes and shows how the papers can be cut to be expandable.

A fascinating, funny, and honest look at how we grow and learn as artists to address issues and use our own creativity to "make it work" in our own ways.

PWAS Members Attend in Person or via Zoom

Prince William Art Society has purchased some tech equipment that will enhance our PWAS membership's ability to take part in our meetings in person or via the internet. There is a Zoom link in the member meeting email reminder, sent out to the membership if you cannot attend in person. Be sure and have the Zoom app/link updated prior to joining the meeting to save time.

Some members live fairly far away considering the commuting times (work and family) that are often a part of living in Northern Virginia. Make sure you mark your calendars and join the meetings so you can stay aware of not only the Artist Guest speaker, but the PWAS Business portion of the meetings as well.

The next Prince William Art Society meeting will be held on Monday, April 24, 2023 at 7:30pm at the Tall Oaks Community Center.

Post 320: Carol Rusaw at Montclair Library

Carol Rusaw at Montclair Library

I am exhibiting some oil paintings now through April at the Montclair Library.  Several members of PWAS have shown their works there, and other members might be interested in knowing about opportunities for their art to be displayed.

2023 Kathleen K. Seefeldt Awards for Arts Excellence Nomination

This is an annual award given in multiple categories in honor of the public service and support of the cultural artist in Prince William County.

https://princewilliamliving.com/nominations-for-annual-kathleen-k-seefeldt-awards-are-now-open/

The Prince William County Arts Council is now calling for nominations for the annual Kathleen K. Seefeldt Awards. The Seefeldt Awards were created over 25 years ago to honor those who sustain Kathleen K. Seefeldt’s legacy of public service and support for the cultural arts of Greater Prince William County. Nominations will be accepted through April 17, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.

Persons and organizations from Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park who live, work or volunteer in these locales may be nominated. Nominations are based on significant or distinguished contribution to arts in the region. The candidate must be 18 years or older at the time of nomination and be available to attend the Awards Ceremony. Previous award recipients who have won in the last five years in the category for the 2022 nomination are not eligible.

Award nominations may be made by anyone in the following categories:

  • Outstanding Arts Educator
  • Outstanding Business Supporter of the Arts
  • Outstanding Individual Artist
  • Outstanding Arts Organization
  • Outstanding Patron
  • Outstanding Volunteer

The nomination form is available on the PWC Arts Council website pwcartscouncil.org or by emailing Susan Bardenhagen, Event Chair, Prince William Arts Council, at STEAM.arts4life@gmail.com.

Self-nominations are acceptable. Those interested must provide a one-page narrative addressing the candidate’s contributions, as outlined in the criteria listed on the form. Nominators should notify the candidate of the submission. Candidates may be asked to provide additional details once an initial nomination is made.

The judging panel will consist of previous award winners and local community leaders. The awards ceremony is open to the public. It will be held on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, on George Mason University’s Science & Technology Campus in Manassas. Those wishing to attend must RSVP to the email provided.

Kathleen K. Seefeldt Awards

The Prince William County Arts Council chose to name the awards in honor of Mrs. Seefeldt because of her long history of service to the county and the state. During her tenure as Chair of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, the Arts Council was established.  She was instrumental in the development of the tri-partite agreement that led to the creation of the Hylton Performing Arts Center. After leaving the Board, she has held several appointed positions on state government commissions as well as volunteer work with a number of charities. Mrs. Seefeldt continues her service to our community and continues to participate in the planning of the event.

Post 317: Art Adventures in Woodbridge

Art Adventures in Woodbridge

There are several times a year here in Woodbridge, that our local Michael's Store announces those beautiful, immortal words, "70% off all Canvases". Joy fills our little artist hearts. After a quick check at the bank account and grabbing any available coupons, we are OFF to Michael's in that mad dash to get the best pickings...

Meet Your Friends at Michael's

Literally and in some different ways!

I get to the store and grab a cart. I really wish they had bigger carts because those wee wheeled baskets don't hold the big canvases. I make a beeline to the art section. With all of the level one, two, three canvases on sale at 70% off, it doesn't get much better than that. All those gallery-wrapped canvases - 4x4, 5x7, 6x6, 8x8, 8x10, 9x12, 10x10, 10x20, 11x14, 12x24, 16x20, 20x20 and on and on...livin' in the artist paradise... Got my ten in my hand and a gleam in my eye... (or was it Gangsta's Paradise?)

If you get there early in the sale, the choices in sizes are best of course. I grab all my favorite sizes plus that size over there. Maybe I need two of those? I wonder if I should have borrowed a tractor trailer?

I turn to go down another aisle and who should appear? A PWAS member thinking the same way I am. I go to the checkout and low and behold, another PWAS member. Impromptu artist meeting! A quick trip? Bah! An afternoon with friends!

OR I have met an artist friend at Michael's before to shop some recommended special effects paints. New toys to play with! Interference, Dragonfly and Color Shift paints are too much fun!

OR as I go up and down the art supplies, I come across another person pondering the merits of mediums. A quick question will open up the conversation, "Oh, are you an artist?" Followed by, "What do you paint?" You know what, you tell them about the Prince William Art Society and bam, you have a new friend and fellow painter!

I did invite some of them to the next PWAS meeting on Monday, March 27 at the Tall Oaks Community Center at 7:30pm. Planting those seeds you know.

I'm happy now as I put away all my new blank canvas purchases, oh the potential. I see the question mark hovering over their cotton surfaces wondering what they will grow up to be.
