Post 295: An Art Scholarship too!

An Art Scholarship too!

Did you know the Prince William Art Society has a scholarship for high school seniors? That's right - not only does PWAS offer opportunities for local artists like gallery and show participation and programs for enrichment, PWAS offers a scholarship for talented Prince William County students planning to pursue degrees in art or art education.

The Jewell Pratt Burns Scholarship from the Prince William Art Society

The Jewell Pratt Burns Scholarship has been being offered continuously (except for 2020 and 2021 when CV-19 interrupted public life) since 2008! Each year either one or two graduating seniors has been presented with a $1,000 award to help them get started on their creative journeys.

2019ScholarshipTable.jpg

Before that presentation in May however, each one had to be accepted into a two or four year college art program, put together a portfolio selected from their work, and submit it with a letter of recommendation from one of their art instructors as well as their own essay about why they should be selected for the award.

Founder Alice LaBier and three early 2008 committee members: Jewell Pratt Burns, Jim Gallagher, Fran Pennington

The PWAS Scholarship Committee meets to review the application packages and makes tentative decisions, but it's not uncommon for those initial choices to be entirely upended by the next step - the student interviews. Each student takes twenty minutes to talk about their art, their challenges and their aspirations. This is the moment when they can go beyond the finite visual achievements spread across the table to talk about what they are reaching for in those works, to show how their skills have grown and continue to grow, and to personalize their package.

The Committee works hard to ensure the entire process is a positive learning experience for students. If we're successful, the one or two students chosen for the monetary award each year aren't the only ones to benefit. We try to leave each student ready to go into their next interview or job application with a bit more confidence. Regardless of the outcome of the award choice, a letter is sent to each student - as well as one to their recommending teacher - with feedback, and thanking them for coming. The thanks are entirely sincere. It really is a privilege to hear their stories, experience their earnestness, and see through their eyes the exciting creative futures they plan.

This year, a $1,000 scholarship will be offered again to each of up to two students. Any Prince William County student in 12th grade, in any public or private school, or who is home schooled and going to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or Art Education can apply. The application, deadlines and addresses are available online and should be consulted for details on the requirements and procedures for entry: PWAS website Scholarship and Outreach

Prince William Art Society's Jewell Pratt Burns Scholarship is entirely funded by donations, and the community has shown enthusiasm over the years for supporting artistically talented youth. A donation box in the Open Space Arts gallery at the Stonebridge Shopping Center (15000 #140 Potomac Town Center, Woodbridge, VA) feeds into the scholarship savings account, and many individuals donate there. Other individuals and groups have donated directly, as well. PWAS is grateful to all the donors who have helped Prince William County youth afford to pursue a career in the arts.

This year, the Prince William Art Society is especially grateful to two direct donors:  Ms. Judy Gallagher made a donation in memory of Jim Gallagher, artist, beloved PWAS member, and active participant on the Scholarship Committee over the years. On behalf of Visual Expressions, a group of artists in the over-55 community of Four Seasons, Sandra McClelland Lewin presented the balance of their operating fund upon disbanding this year. The group wanted to ensure the funds would go to support the visual arts in Prince William County.

Post 294: Great Find - Varnishing Artwork Videos

Great Find - Varnishing Artwork Videos

I have been asked by several Prince William Art Society members, "Do you varnish your paintings? If you do, what do you use?" Perhaps it is because of how my finished artwork appears or just in general. For whatever reason, I'm offering these 'Great Find Videos' here about varnishing videos I have watched and found quite useful, and I will give you my answer to the member questions too.

Acrylic Varnishing

Finding Jerry's Live videos with Emmy - every Tuesday at about 5pm have been very informative. You may want to go to Jerry's Artarama and get signed up for the reminders. The videos can also be found on Jerry's Live on Youtube - so have at it! I actually won a really nice watercolor set one time from Jerry's when watching a live show and answering a question! I often take notes because they offer so much info!

I mainly paint in acrylics so this first video was of great interest to me. Nonetheless, with all the fluctuations in prices and supply chain shortages ongoing - my favored varnish to use on acrylic paintings has been Krylon Kamar Varnish. The cost of a can has increased, so do shop around. Walmart may still be the least expensive place to occasionally find it. Originally, I was finding it at about $5-6 a can, but its more now.

I've also been asked, "Do you feel like artwork should be varnished?" Empathic "YES!" from me. I feel like it protects the artwork from wear, tear, sun, dust far better than not having it. You do want varnish with longevity of the artwork in mind and non-yellowing.

I DO RECOMMEND taking your art photos BEFORE you varnish though. The camera will often pick up the shine and you will have to deal with that in Photoshop.

Can you paint over the varnish, touchups, changes? Yes, with the Kamar Varnish. Then respray.

As far as the color changing after you varnish, I LOVE IT. I love the intensity and depth that a good varnish brings out. That's me. You do you.

Oil Varnishing

I haven't oil painted in awhile, but I hope to try it again in the near future. I'll be rewatching this video when I do.

What do you use, if you varnish? Why?

Great Find Videos - do you, as a PWAS member, have a suggestion for a video you have found? Send me the link and the reason why we need to share it on this blog.

Post 293: Miss the Party?

Miss the Party?

Friday, February 3, 2023 Did you miss the party? We recently had an artist reception for the "African American Voices and Visions" art show at Open Space Arts at Stonebridge. If you missed it, you missed a great one! Art receptions have a good many benefits - from promoting art to the whole community, a bit of networking, getting to know the artists, to just plain fun! The benefits to the artists, especially newer artists, can be invaluable as well.

Meet Artists at the Show

Browsing the art at an art reception, especially with the presence of the artist(s) that created it is an excellent way for the visitor as well as the artist, to share what the art piece is - what they both see and feel about the art. The artist can share why they created it and what they feel it represents. He or she can share the story 'behind the art' which can give the viewer a better introspect about the piece. The visitor can express how they see it as well, which could be very nice feedback for the artist too.

I'm going to take the opportunity to share the benefits of being at the art reception here along with pictures of this party of Friday, February 2023.

The Artists with Their Art

Let's introduce the artists in attendance...

Penny Shaw

Donna Liguria

Anna Gatling

Michelle Baker

Susan Furr

Tom Payne

Michael Kent

Brenda Vann

Otis Stanley

Fatima Farzana

John Holden

For the Guests: You don't have to know the artists, but you can meet them. If you see artwork you like, see if the artist is there and tell them! Understand that they may get called off to meet others though, as often happens, so their time needs to be spread around the gallery.

It would be nice if a piece of art had a button you could press and the storyteller (the artist) would tell you about what you are looking at. Alas, you are more often left to interpret the meaning of the piece on your own unless the artist happens to be nearby. Which can happen at an artist reception!

For the Artist: Art receptions can help build confidence for the artist, not only in speaking about their art and getting in all the picture taking (thus promotional materials), but the hobnobbing with the art community in attendance at large. It is good practice for an artist (especially shy ones) to get out there and learn how to talk about their art.

Now, on with the Show...

Celebrating "African American Voices and Visions" this February, Open Space Arts is featuring 24 artists this month, in a variety of mediums and styles.

Enjoy all of the Artistic Entertainments

Go to an art reception, whether as a visitor or if you are an artist! You will often experience live music, food and beverage, poetry or a literary reading and/or more.

  • Unless otherwise stated, when the art reception says "open to the public", that means everyone is welcome to attend.
  • There is not an art gallery "dress code". We have visitors strolling in that just went out to eat and stop in. Or they are shopping and stopping. You can dress nicely and comfortably but there isn't any requirement on dress, other than that you are.
  • Date night? Why not walk the gallery?
  • You can stay as long as you like - enjoy the food, drink available - but don't do the too much route (especially if there is alcohol!).
  • You are NOT obligated to buy art or art prints. Of course, the artist(s) are happy if you do, but the Open Space Art artist receptions are free (as most art receptions are).

Other Artist and Gallery Note Ideas:

  • Have a guest book - for guests to sign (think email list too)
  • Have name tags - especially for the artists
  • Introduce the artists! Find a way to have your artists stand out.
  • Welcome visitors at the door and hand out brochures, name tags, or artist/gallery/upcoming events, promo materials at the door. Gift bag them!
  • Artists: Have your business cards on you - just in case
  • Have noticeable gallery "help" persons so that guests know who to go to if they are interested in art purchasing or more info.
  • Have less expensive art and art prints available for 'cash and carry' pieces, so that anyone can support the artists!
  • Got easels? Of course you do! Strategically place and promote - anything. Even if its the next art reception/show.
  • Children's art table - something to keep the youngsters busy during the event.
  • Be Photo ready - remember that although typically taking photos of the art itself is often discouraged, at an art reception, there are photographers taking photos of everyone for publicity and social media and of course, Artistry Spin. YOU, the artist are on display, from all angles as well!

The beauty of an art show reception is that the space is already decorated with great art in the background! Picture what other events could use a space like Open Space Arts.

A BIG thank you to all that did ALL of the work in having such an AWESOME artist reception! Great job!

And if you 'Missed the Party', we'll see you at the next one!

Post 291: Great Find - Art Sales Video

Great Find - Art Sales Video

Perhaps a new series of Artistry Spin Blog Posts are "Great Find Art Videos". One of the PWAS (Prince William Art Society) members sent me this video link and it is really good enough to share with our art group...because we volunteer at Open Space Arts. We as the volunteers are the "sales persons" and we represent all the artists that have artwork up whether our art is up or not.

Sales Tips for Live Art Shows

Please click the video below or the link to watch the video.

Notice all the tips...
1. Greeting
2. Be prepared to engage
3. Listen to them
4. Ask questions
5. Place item in their hands (a little tougher with a painting, any ideas with this one?)
6. Include everyone in their party
7. Eye contact!
8. Child with party? Bubblewrap diversion

What do you think? Do you have suggestions to share with our volunteers at the gallery?

Do you have a Great Find Art Video to share? Send me the link and tell me why you want to Share it.
