Post 14: More from Arts Alive Sunday, September 12, 2021 Recap 2

More from Arts Alive on Sunday, September 12, 2021

Arts Alive at the Hylton Performing Arts Center is a great place for an art show for artists and the art lovers. For several of our new PWAS members, this was their first show. It is an eye opening experience, where you learn a lot.

Successful Day in Manassas at the Show

We sold a lot of art with 8 out of 11 of our art members selling art, art prints, and/or art merchandise. From the members that have been at Arts Alive in previous years, it was said the foot traffic was the best it had ever been.

It really is interesting and I'll say, satisfying to see people admiring you work. Watching them stop in front of certain pieces and point, and the murmuring of approval and comments are really good to hear. Like any actor or performer, I guess we like hearing the feedback just like they do.

Lots of Activities During the Day

PWAS Member Andrea Castaneda did a live paint display to music on stage. She's on Facebook so you may see her there.

Gift bags with info were given out to the visitors - info on Hylton Performing Arts Center, PWCAC, PWAS and more.

Of course, 4:00 comes eventually and the break down begins. Some artists do have lighter loads to repack up. It was a fun day, exhausting for some, but fun. It was lovely to be able to sit back and chat with our PWAS Team members and speak to the visitors. Actually, a LOT of visitors of all ages. It was great to see them enjoying the artwork.

Post 13: PWAS at Arts Alive Sunday, Sept 12, 2021 Recap 1

Arts Alive Recap 1 from Sunday, September 12, 2021

Many PWAS members took part in the annual Arts Alive event where all kinds of art was on display - mini ballerinas in tutus, live performances, demonstrations, music and visual arts. And of course, complimented by the food vendors outside.

Getting Ready to Leave for the Art Show

A beautiful September day dawns with PWAS members loading their vehicles with their artwork, art prints, art inventory lists, print stands, gridwall panels, and water bottles in hand. Their GPS is set to go to Hylton Performing Arts Center, 10960 George Mason Cir, Manassas, VA 20110; they all take off with the arrival time desired of 10:30 am.

Pulling up to the curb, each artist unloads the vehicle and hikes into the building - our intention is an absolute fixation of set up and be ready for the high noon "release the kraken" (the opening of the doors).

The temperatures will be scratching at 90 degrees, so we go in with the hope of a lighter load when the doors close at 4. We also look forward to chatting with the people that come by to see all of the arts on display, the live performances, exhibits, live demonstrations, writers reading, music and answering the questions of art fans of all ages.

Setting Up for the Art Show

The setup of the gridwall panels begins. The A bar fits into the B bar with the footer C into the bottom to the B bar. Sort of like Ikea directions. (I'm kidding.) What's the best layout to the space we are allotted? All this must be configured and followed by "hang 'em HIGH!"

Each artist sets up and hangs his or her art area with whatever they have brought with them. Then rearranges their display several times until they are happy with how it looks. The intention is to hang an eye catching piece in a dominant spot to entice the viewer to stop and look. Similarly themed artwork grouped might be taken into consideration as well.

Of course, as the time gets closer to noon, "JUST GET THEM HUNG!" is alerted. And tagged. Maybe rearrange them again. Looking around, reminder to self: "I think I brought a lot of art. Maybe step back a pace or two the next show."

We are all familiar with the requirements of hanging, and try to make sure we follow those guidelines...especially to not hang off the panel!

Anyway, here are a few of the pictures, I'll do another post tomorrow or so with more.

PWAS Members - got pictures? Send them to me too!

Post 12: Clearbrook Art Changeover with New Sept/Oct Theme

      PWAS Bi-Monthly Art Changeover

The September and October Art Changeover occurred this week - so while I was picking up my artwork from Clearbrook that came down, I quickly took some snapshots of the art on the walls that went up. The Theme Wall is Fall/Autumn,/Halloween, so a short video kicks this off.

      The Clearbrook Team

PWAS members: Shadow, Barbara and Bilee are all a part of the Clearbrook Team that bi-monthly changes out the artwork for the PWAS members. What a fantastic job they do every month! They group and organize each area and hang the art.

The photographs never do the art justice. Meaning of course, that seeing all the art in person is the best way to appreciate each piece.

Clearbrook Center of the Arts is open every Saturday and Sunday, from 1 to 4pm - so take a few moments out of your day to go enjoy the display - its free to see. And, if you are an artist or know someone that is, tell them about PWAS - we welcome new members! See https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/p/membership.html for more info.

As you can see, quite a variety of art styles and subject matter from the PWAS Members!

      Post 11: A 50th Anniversary for PWAS

PWAS's Fifty Year Anniversary Celebration Recap

This past spring, PWAS - the Prince William Art Society, celebrated a HUGE anniversary milestone, fifty years.

      Sunshine Ridge Farm Winery

The date of the celebration was June 5, 2021 and the where was at The Winery at Sunshine Ridge Farm in Gainesville, Virginia. It was a beautiful location on the bank of the lake in the upper room of the winery, such a lovely view.

The PWAS membership had just had a juried art events at the winery, so our artwork was hung all around the room. The long time PWAS member friends and their spouses gathered with newer members and got to know each other better over good food and of course, great wine.

Also invited to celebrate with us were local Prince William County officials, Clearbrook staff, Prince William County Arts Council staff and long time members that have since moved away.

Here are some of the pictures that were taken.

Sandra McClelland Lewin, President of PWAS 2020 - 2021

Herb Williams, the Arts and Recreation Specialist for Prince William County and PWAS Member, Bettie Sperty

Jewell Pratt Burns - the namesake of the PWAS Scholarship Program and a founding charter member of the original PWAS group, Woodbridge Art Guild

Read about the history of the PWAS group on our first blog post at https://artistryspin.blogspot.com/2021/08/post-1-about-pwas-history-of-prince.html

Fifty years is a wonderful milestone to hit for any group, I believe. And I hope to be a part going into the next fifty years (although making that 100 year anniversary would involve a miracle on my part). Being a part of the group has been a fantastic learning experience and I'm certainly looking forward to creating and displaying more artwork with my fellow PWAS members as well as being an encouragement for any new members going forward.

The artist may move on, but the art remains.
