Post 535: PWAS Bluebell Challenge and Call for Art

PWAS Bluebell Challenge and Call for Art

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) will have a table and a shared tent at the Bluebell Festival again this year on Sunday, March 30, 2025 from 10-3 which means that space for vendors and sizes of the artwork will be limited. We are combining this art show with a PWAS Art Challenge so that we have Bluebell and Nature themed artworks to show for the visitors.

The Bluebell Festival at Merrimac Farm

The Bluebell Festival will be held on Sunday, March 30 from 10 to 3 at the Merrimac Farm at 15020 Deepwood Lane, Nokesville, VA. This annual festival is sponsored by the Prince William Conservation Alliance and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

The dress code for being out with the Bluebells is proper footwear! Pathways may be muddy, so boots are best.

Another note is to get there early. The parking lots filled early and the road to get in was backed up with cars. The suggestion is to carpool if you can!

Staci Blanchard and Donna Liguria are coordinating the PWAS table at the Bluebell Festival so questions should be directed to thegoddessofglitter.art@gmail.com and Donna.Liguria@outlook.com

PWAS Bluebell Challenge

The PWAS Bluebell Challenge starts now! January 31 to March 24 – Bluebells are the emphasis for our 2nd Art Challenge. We ask for the PWAS members to create small artworks for the Bluebell Festival in any medium they like. We'll do the Bluebell Challenge similar to how we did the previous Lime Challenge but for the Bluebell Festival, other nature artwork is acceptable as well for the show.

Ok, we clear? The Bluebell Challenge is Bluebell specific artwork.

For the Bluebell Festival - Nature and Bluebells can be submitted.

Display and Sizes to Submit

  1. Up to 4 Miniature 3x4 artworks with easels

  2. Or, up to 3 SMALL art pieces or canvases.

Bring your finished artwork and inventory lists to the March 24 PWAS Meeting at 7:30pm at the Tall Oaks Community Center 12298 Cotton Mill Drive, Woodbridge, VA.

*Note that we may have a special presentation of the PWAS Bluebell Art Challenge entries at the March 24 meeting. This will be for the Bluebell specific artwork and we may vote on our favorites. Pictures will be taken to help promote PWAS at the Bluebell Festival.

Please provide protective material for your own art/prints for transport.

Plein Air Painting at the Bluebell Festival

The PWAS Plein Air Posse (PPAP) will be at the Bluebell Festival painting during the Festival on Sunday, March 30. Post 533: A PWAS Meeting with Guest Speaker Robert Dew

A PWAS Meeting with Guest Speaker Robert Dew

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) met on Monday, January 27, 2025 at 7:30pm at the Tall Oaks Community Center in Woodbridge for our monthly meeting. Our wonderful guest speaker was a fellow member, Robert Dew who gave a great presentation on Plein Air Painting.

Plein Air Painting with Robert Dew

Robert's presentation on how he prepares to go out and paint out-of-doors was a well-received one! He described how he set up for oil painting and for watercolor painting and emphasized that you really do not need to spend a lot on supplies - especially if you are a beginner or if you are unsure if you will enjoy the experience of taking your art process outside.

Robert spoke of various experiences in different locations and painting while on vacation, then showed the artwork created when doing so. He gave a lot of great tips and suggestions including having a much smaller painting pack while traveling and the importance of taking plenty of pictures for several quite reasonable reasons: (1) the light changes every second making the process of painting quickly and loosely rather mandatory; and (2) when traveling with a nonartist friend, partner, or spouse, they may not be too keen on spending too much time in one spot! So a quick sketch or rough outline for a subject goes into one of his art journals.

The Q&A section of Robert's presentation had a lot of great questions including his painting surfaces, papers, and how he picks interesting angles and 'views' for his subject matter. And absolutely, he loves a beautiful sunny day for painting!

In a recent blog post, I asked Robert how he stored all of his artwork. If you follow Robert on Facebook, he is posting new artwork ALL the time - rather amazing but as he has said, he tries to paint something every day. In the colder weather, he may be indoors more often but when Plein Air Painting, he will often get several pieces started - and will occasionally complete them at home. See these links:

Bluebells and the Plein Air Posse

Interested in Plein Air Painting? Often it is best to learn by just getting out there and doing it.

See suggestions for what you might need while Plein Air Painting but as stated above by Robert, don't invest a lot of money into the supplies unless this is definitely an art creation avenue you want to explore. Plein Air Painting Equipment and Supplies

In 2024, the Prince William Art Society started their PWAS Plein Air Posse (PPAP) group and Robert Dew and David Dillon are the leaders of this group of artists. They would be happy to extend the invitation to go out and paint to any PWAS members that would like to give it a try. Just contact them to see when and where works for everyone.

Contact Robert Dew rddew@live.com and David Dillion anarty1@comcast.net

As a matter of fact, the PPAP will be out painting at the Sunday, March 30, 2025 Bluebell Festival at Merrimac Farm located at 15020 Deepwood Lane, Nokesville, VA where PWAS will also have a table set up with artwork from our members for sale. You are very welcome to join the group of painters. Contact Robert and David if you are interested in painting there.

A big thank you to Robert Dew for this great presentation!

PWAS Business

After Robert Dew's Plein Air Painting presentation, the PWAS members broke for snacks and beverages, mingling with the visitors and fellow members, followed by the business portion for the group. The members learned about where we are, what's going on, what art events are coming up, and so much more.

Did you enjoy Robert's presentation as much as I did? Leave a comment below.

Post 532: Art Tips from Various Sources

Art Tips from Various Sources

Several art tips and suggestions that an artist may find useful from art created in a workshop to the use of a cotton or a linen canvas. Check out the art suggestions here and drop your thoughts in the comment area too.

Art Tips: the best advice for artists from artists

Can You Sell Artwork From a Painting Class?

The short answer is typically a NO. There would be copyright infringements because the artwork (photo) you are probably using as a reference photo is not originally yours in composition, design, or idea. Some online workshops will have statements on the use of the workshop art created.

What Do You Do With Your Workshop Painting?

Painting Workshops - Ethics and Copyright

An interesting art topic especially as we often learn from the old masters and use their wonderful art to learn from too. See those links above to learn how to sign your rendition of "Girl With a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer.

From Zee Berrios

For those who work with acrylics and save leftover paints... the way to avoid the paints from getting mildew is to spray a little Vinegar in the container then seal it. Mildew will not grow in it.

Also, highly recommended is the book: Compendium of Acrylic Painting Techniques (By Gil Barron). There are hundred of books out there on the subject, but this one is above the rest. It has hundreds of practical tips, techniques and great ideas on the subject.

From Robert Dew

I recently asked Robert how he stores all the paintings he does. The reason I asked him is because he tries to paint - at the least one - painting every single day and often paints more than one! He is a very prolific plein air artist. Here was his answer:

"I do the majority of my work on paper so I can stack them up and not take up too much space.  I only use canvases for commissions . I do use boards for plein air oils but they stack quite easily. I also only frame when I have to, that really saves space."

From Mark Clifton

I also asked Mark Clifton on the differences between a linen canvas (more expensive) and a regular cotton stretched canvas (less expensive) that you might purchase from an art store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Here is what he said:

"So far I can't tell much difference between linen canvas and cotton canvas. Linen is a finer weave though. After adding three or four coats of gesso it doesn't seem to matter. On this one I sprung for the most expensive Old Holland linen as an experiment, which added thirty dollars over a good canvas, and it seems about the same."

I would ask our blog readers their thoughts on any differences in the canvas types - please drop a comment below. (Please see Comments to better understand how to not post as 'Anonymous'.)
