Post 517: Mixed Media Class with Penny Shaw

Mixed Media Class with Penny Shaw

A Mixed Media Workshop from the Prince William Art Society art group was given by Penny Shaw on Saturday, November 2, 2024 from 12-4pm.This workshop is the 9th in a series of 10 classes offered by the group in 2024 that have been offered free to the public.

Mixed Media Art Workshop

This beginning mixed media class explored the use of various papers, permanent markers, paint pens and assorted objects to create compositions found in nature.  Students observed images of reference photos learned to break them into background, middle ground, and foreground sections.  Students were encouraged to bring their favorite nature photos to class to use as a reference image. This class was led by Penny Shaw, an accomplished Woodbridge area artist. This event was held at the Chinn Park Library.

Chinn Park Library is at 13065 Chinn Park Drive, Woodbridge, VA 22192

Projects in Progress

The students enjoyed the class! It was challenging but fun. Several Prince William Art Society members were in attendance as well as area artists.

As you can see from the mixed media on display, these are all works that will be in progress for awhile. In Penny's workshop today, she had her students begin their landscapes with the torn paper pieces that were used with Modge Podge. The papers will need to all dry about 8 hours before moving to any next steps.

Next steps could include about anything, too. As stated above, the background and potentially the middle ground of the artwork were started but must dry before moving to the foreground and details. Anything can be added including paint, ink, pens, crayons, acrylic pens, fabric, more paper, kitchen sinks. Also we will need to trim the edges as the papers are not always attached exactly straight on the edge of the paper.

I would LOVE to see the student's pictures once they have completed their artwork - be sure and send me a photo!

And thank you Penny! A whole new world of art just opened!

Post 514: About the PWAS Art Store

Learn About the PWAS Art Store

The PWAS Artistry Spin Blog is available to the Prince William Art Society members to use as a point of interest, information, announcements, news, photo gallery, art tips, suggestions, answer questions, and occasionally entertainment in addition to the group's website PrinceWilliamArtSociety.com, and usually in detail. A new page has been added to this Blog called "Art Store" to help everyone understand what it is for and how it is used.

New PWAS Art Store Page

Blog posts and Blog pages are meant to be detailed and additional information for artists and members of the Prince William Art Society on many different topics of interest to all.

In managing a recent Call for Art for the Prince William Art Society, we had various questions and concerns come up that should be addressed so this Art Store page was created in the top navigation of the Artistry Spin Blog about the PWAS Art Store found on the PWAS website. Going forward, please use this page as a reference.

The Prince William Art Society website: https://www.princewilliamartsociety.com/

In a nutshell, the PWAS Art Store on the website is available under various conditions for PWAS Members to display artwork when the location of an art show does NOT manage the art sales. Interested Buyers can take a photo of the QR Code to find artwork that is on display for purchase.

At most of the art shows, festivals, and events that the Prince William Art Society attends, the artists 'man' a table and handles the art sales in real time, in person, right then and there. But occasionally an art show is only a display of art in a business location, a winery, or a library for example, where someone does not handle sales at that location. Hence the need for a QR Code and a website to safely and securely manage those art sales for interested art admirers.

Have a look at the Art Store page to learn more about the use of the store itself for the Artist and the Buyer, and by browsing the artwork available in the Art Store on the website - of course! Let me know if the new Art Store page covers your questions too!
