Break out the hook

Is it just me or do you ever want to break out the hook to get viewers to back up and see your hung work properly?

What's your suggested distance to view hung paintings properly?

Post 243: October PWAS Meeting - Monday, October 24, 2022 7:30pm

October PWAS Meeting - Monday, October 24, 2022 7:30pm

The Prince William Art Society (PWAS) meets the 4th Monday of the month at 7:30pm. - So, come join us for our monthly meeting, October 24, at Tall Oaks Community Center, 12298 Cotton Mill Dr. Woodbridge, VA.  Meetings are free and open to all.  After the business portion of our monthly meeting, we will be featuring another local artist, Bettie Sperty.

Bettie Sperty Brings the Program

Ms. Sperty is a mostly self-taught artist who enjoys working with a variety of mediums. Her pieces - both paintings and pottery - are quite often enhanced with metallic foils, iridescent paints or other sparkling accents.  She will be sharing some of her techniques and secrets with us at the October 24th PWAS meeting, so come and find out about local opportunities for artists, have some refreshments, and then enjoy a free presentation that just might inspire you to add a bit of gleam to one of your works.

 See you at the meeting!

Post 242: Fall Art at the Mill Oct 1-16, 2022

Fall Art at the Mill Oct 1-16, 2022

The Open Space Arts Gallery wanted to share this link with you, especially if you have not heard of this art show held in Millwood, Virginia (and online). Since I have been a member of PWAS, I have heard talk of the "Art at the Mill" show periodically, often in the very hushed tones of sheer reverence.

Art At The Mill

Don't worry, the current call for art is closed, so no frantic rush to submit art. Definitely read more about the show on their homepage at https://artatthemill.artcall.org/

The OSA Committee shares this link with you on the artwork that was juried into the show - and part of the mention of this is that they juried in all 1,124 pieces showing. Wowzers, makes me wonder how many pieces were submitted! Check out the art here:

The show is sponsored by the Clarke County Historical Association (CCHA)

That's just over an hour from Woodbridge, which isn't too bad. Keep an eye out for the next call for art though.

Post 241: Stonebridge Petoberfest October 15, 2022

Stonebridge Petoberfest October 15, 2022

Move over Westminster Dog Show, Petoberfest at Stonebridge can give you some canine competition. Throw in a few cats in containers (and leashed) and a bunny, the critters in costumers were everywhere. I believe every dog breed known to man was out there - big ones, REALLY big ones, wide ones, and teenie tiny ones. I saw dinosaurs too.

Prince William Art Society (PWAS) Popup Art Show

It was an absolutely gorgeous day to grab the puppies and kids and get out to Stonebridge. Or if you wanted to adopt a puppy, there were lots of wagging tails waiting for homes too.

PWAS had a couple of tents setup outside the Open Space Art gallery featuring all creatures great and small. We have lots of artists that LOVE to take commissions on pet portraits, so samples of their work were on display to show their styles. Here are some shots of Day of the Dogs. And a few people went home with animal artwork for their walls too.

Post 240: PWAS Member Halloween Seasonal Art

PWAS Member Halloween Seasonal Art

Maybe a new feature blog post for the PWAS members is to post seasonal art for that month...Most artists have landscapes or other artwork in their inventory with snow or spring flowers, fall colors and summer splashing in a lake or seaside. We have everything from sparklers for the 4th of July with fireworks, Christmas decorations with red and green to the quiet of a snowfall drifting across a barn.

Every month there is a celebration, a holiday, or season that we paint. So from the PWAS members, let's start posting your past "flavors" of the month up until that holiday/seasonal date. Posting may be as I get a few responses - let's see how it goes - but time to show off your art!

Artists may state if it's for sale or not, a title, size, etc. (or not). Contact the artist directly if you are interested in their artwork.

Halloween Season with All the Creepy, Crawly, and More

Here are a few of the PWAS member's art responses.

Lisa Diernisse

Here is a not-so-spooky black cat, 8x10" acrylic on canvas (not for sale).

Sheri Herrick

Here are a few photos of the rocks that I painted years ago and put out this time of year! They are all painted with acrylics and sprayed with exterior sealer.

Me and my mini paintings - I had to have something for the Halloween season. These are some of my 3x4 canvases of pumpkins and of course, cats. I have a herd of black cats and then a few of "One Cat Too Many".

Sandra McClelland Lewin

"Nevermore, Poe. Nevermore" and is acrylic. It's on a 20"x20"x1.5" canvas. The original painting is sold but prints are available.

Post 239: Meet a PWAS Member: Helen Burroughs

Meet a PWAS Member: Helen Burroughs

A Lifelong Art Lover & At Collector Becomes an Artist

Helen Burroughs has loved art since childhood. As an executive, she traveled the world for work and collected art along the way. In retirement, a conversation with a gallery owner sparked an artistic journey that is evolving and flourishing today.

Pushing the Boundaries of Mediums

Helen has enjoyed using acrylics and oil pastels to create both representational and abstract art:

In our interview linked below, Helen tells us how she has come to incorporate textiles into her visual art, from ribbon embroidery to a new wool technique that she is developing herself. It's exciting to hear how an artist has pushed her art into new media and directions!

In fact, Helen is currently creating a body of work for an exhibition that's scheduled for January 2023 at the McLean Textile Gallery.

More Inspiration from Helen: An Artist Catalog

In our recorded conversation, Helen shows us a remarkable marketing tool that she created: a full-color artist catalog. As you watch her flip through the catalog, you may be inspired to create something similar to showcase your own artwork!

Watch Helen's Interview Below—She's on a remarkable journey!
