Waterscapes in Pastels with Michele Frantz

A transplanted Californian, Michele Frantz began her career as an artist after receiving a degree in graphic arts from Appalachian State University in North Carolina. After moving to Virginia, she decided to put her education and experience to use teaching art to others. Her work has received numerous awards, including Best in Show. She is also a recipient of the Seefeldt Award for Arts Excellence presented by the Prince William Arts Council.

In this workshop, students will learn how to use blending, layering,  underpainting and other techniques to create luscious pastel paintings.

Open Space Arts Gallery and Workshop - Stonebridge Center

Don't miss out on this fun afternoon of a Scotty Paints Oil Painting Workshop to be held at the Open Space Arts Gallery and Workshop in the Stonebridge Shopping Center, Woodbridge, VA.

In this workshop you will paint the "Sunrise Seascape" that was featured in the Bob Ross "Joy of Painting" ® series tv show. If you want to get a head start, you can see this painting come to life in the Season 5 Episode 6 video on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0Bz6TNUK1Q


 

In this workshop you will be completing a 16" x 20" canvas painting in oil taught by Scott McDonald, a Certified Ross Instructor. We will be working in the wet-on-wet oil technique to create this painting in one sitting. All course materials are provided. Since the painting will be wet when you leave with it, you will need to have a flat level space in your vehicle to get your masterpiece safely home. Please wear "painting clothes", aprons will be available as well for you to use.

Payment for the workshop ($75.00) will be taken at the workshop in the form of either cash, credit card, or an online payment by scanning a QR Code with a smart phone.

We allow four hours for the workshop to ensure all students get the care and attention they need to complete the painting in one sitting. If for some reason you will not be able to attend, please send an e-mail to scottypaints54@gmail.com to let us know so we can move on to the next name on our waiting list.

The Open Space Gallery is locate in the Stonebridge Shopping Center in between "Ulta" and "The Loft" at 15000 #140 Potomac Town Pl, Woodbridge, VA 22191. We suggest parking in the parking lot behind the building to facilitate moving your painting from the backdoor of the workshop to your vehicle.

About Elena Jochum

Elena Jochum has been creating art for as long as she can remember. She is a 3rd generation artist and creating has been so generous with healing qualities as well as providing confidence during turbulent times. She recently moved back to Virginia after spending 3 years on the island of Okinawa, Japan during the pandemic.

Elena has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Towson University and her internship was in Art with a Heart, a non profit focusing on art therapy. She continued her education and received a Post Baccalaureate in Fine Art from MICA. Elena  Jochum’s career as a graphic designer involved working on projects for Disney and Harry Potter. The most recent project before moving to Japan was a redesign project for National Geographic HQ in DC. She was a senior designer and she and her team won 3 awards for the project.

Strong passion for fine art and especially grasping fundamentals and different techniques has been extremely constant throughout the creative journey for Elena. She has been teaching on and off for the past 18 years.

During this upcoming program, the students will learn how to make their mark confidently with understanding of the fine art fundamentals. They are line, color, value, shape, form, space, and texture.

About Michele Frantz

Michele Frantz thinks of her art as an act of sharing, a desire to let other people see as she sees, and feel as she feels about a subject. A transplanted Californian, Michele began her career as an artist after receiving a bachelor’s degree in graphic arts. Originally dividing her time between desktop publishing and painting, she entered her first juried fine art show, and placed third. Encouraged by this success, Michele began to focus on fine art, and has since become accomplished in a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylics, pastels and colored pencil. Her work has received awards in several competitions, and she is honored to be a recipient of the the Prince William County Arts Council's Seefeldt Award for Arts Excellence.

Michele eventually decided to put her education and experience to use teaching others, and currently teaches a variety of media at several locations in the area. As an instructor, she believes what you paint is less important than simply relishing the act of painting, and encourages her students to find their own style and modes of expression.

Landscapes in Pastel Workshop with Michele Frantz

 

In this one-day workshop for all skill levels, students will learn the basics of pastel craftsmanship: sketching, layering, blending and finishing. Working from a photo provided by Michele or their own photo reference students will complete a ”pastel painting.”

Scott McDonald - A Painting Progress Program

Monday, August 22, 2022 at the Prince William Art Society meeting, after PWAS business was attended to including upcoming art events, Scott McDonald took the floor.

An Artist's Journey Can Detour

As many an artist has done, they discover at a young age the beauty in the world around them and a keen interest in how to get it to canvas. Scott told of his introduction to the world of art from paintings by his Grandmother's flowers and his desire to capture those memories. Then when he was in school and taking art classes, he finally thought he would get the chance to do that, except he went through a series of art teachers that simply said "Paint this." And then later, "Ok, good."

So his progress in his art journey, took some twists and turns as he described them in his program, including joining the Navy and setting art down for a long period of time.

 

 

 

 

And now Scott is a certified Bob Ross method teacher! And he finally learned to paint those flowers like his Grandmother did.
